LAID'S
play can really confuse and eventu-
ally destroy an offensive unit. It also,
can get caught with its pants down.
So, don’t be surprised to see a
long run or pass come about. It is
part of what happens using this
defense. But, pro teams that use this
defense, believe that if you can keep
the opponents to only two such, big
plays a game, you can win.
The offense, will take longer to
develop. Quarterback Lance Dillard
has had a recurring back problem,
and should he not start, look for'
junior Jeff Kuykendall to step in. No
matter who is at quarterback, some
passing game needs to work. If it
doesn’t, look for San Saba to smother
tailback Hondo Overstreet on every
play.
It comes down to this. Can the
Jacket defense hold a ‘Dillo team
that won 11 games in 1987? And capr A
it hold on long enough for the offense.
to score? I think so. Llano 8, San

Saturday morning the Llano fresh-
men team held a scrimmage with
Kerrville Tivy freshmen who wec
larger and there were a lot more ft
them.
In the first defensive series for
Llano, the Yellow Jackets managed
to stop Kerrville on their first series
of downs. Kerrville then got its act
together and relentlessly drove to
the goal line for a touchdown.
The first Llano offensive series got
off to a slow start before getting a
drive going deep into Kerrville
territory. Facing a fourth down
inside of the Kerrville 10-yard-line,
the Yellow Jackets were thrown for a
loss to end the drive. Coaches were
pleased with the efforts of the team.
Hane at San Saba
it should be quite a battle at San
Saba this Friday at 8 p.m. as the
YeUow Jackets try to avenge a 28-15
loss in their opening game last year.
"I don’t think they are quite as
strong as they were last year.”
Spivey said when asked what to
expect at the game. "They have a
new coach, but lost Some very key
players to graduation last year. They
are picked to win their district again
this year.”
San Saba is also coming off of two
successful scrimmages, having out-

Once again. the Llano coaching
staff was well-pleased with the
progress of the defensive and
offensive units in a controlled
scrimmage held last Friday at
Junction.
Athletic director and head football
coach Lynn Spivey said, “The
defense did an excellent job.” He
described the offense as being a little
"inconsistent."
"There were times that we moved
the ball quite well, but then
something would happen and we
would have to start all over again,"
Spivey said. "We sort of figured the
defense would be a little ahead of the
offense."
Llano and Junction first and second
teams ran a total of 60 plays each and
the Llano defensive unit held the
Eagles to just two first downs and a
total of 54 yards of offense.
"Most outstanding was our pass
defense that intercepted four Junc-
tions passes,” Spivey added.
The Yellow Jacket offense chalked
up about 105 yards this night. Curtis
Hartman broke through on a dive
play and scored the only touchdown
for Llano.
The first tournament will be held
at the Llano Golf Course, Satur-
day. September 10 with a shotgun

The 1988 Llano Yellow Jackets
face their first test against San Saba
this Friday night in ’Dillo land.
Although September 2 is only the
second day of school, the Jackets are
in their fourth full week of workouts.
While the Jackets appear to be in
pretty fair shape, more concentration
this season has been spent on
technique and team drills, than just
running. The intense heat is one
reason, and likely the other being
more work was needed in learning
the new defense.
Hopefully, the four down linemen,
snd four linebackers look of the
Jackets will produce dividends a-
gainst San Saba. From all the hot,
hard work, the defense could save
the day, or for that matter, the
season. The individuals on the
Jacket defense are more intense, snd
more aggressive group than in past
years.
It appears Llano will be doing a lot
of stunts and blitzing. This type of
