Leon Williams Bell, 91, grandson
of early settlers in middle Tennes-
see, was born February 15, 1897, in
Allisons, Tennessee, near Nashville.
He died October 21, 1988. Graveside
services took place in Llano City
Cemtery October 23, with the Rev.
Jerald Moore officiating.
Mr. Bell engaged in dairy farming
with his father near Allisons before
moving to Columbus. Mississippi.
There he raised cotton and cattle on
a plantation in the 1930s during the
depression. He was the owner of the
John Deer dealership in Columbus
and Macon.
In 1952, he moved his family to
Llano County, where he actively
engaged in the cattle business for
many years before buying a cattle
ranch near Clayton, New Mexico. He
and Mrs. Bell spent their summers
at the ranch, then returned to their
home in Llano for the winters.
Mr. Bell was keenly interested in the
early history of America and espe-
cially the west, and until the last few
months, was able to relate many of
his interesting experiences with
western authors and prominent men
he had known and admired.
He was especially compassionate to
people in need and to victims of
disaster. He was always among the
first to quietly offer financial aid and
support without wanting recognition.
He is survived by his wife, Grace
Williams Bell; four sons, Leon W.
Bell, Jr., of Memphis, Tennessee,
James M. and John Harvey Bell of
Austin and William M. Bell of Llano;
eight grandchildren and one great
grandson.
He is also survived by a brother-in-
law, Dr. Harvey M. Williams of San
Angelo, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Sophia
W. Crosley of San Diego, California,
and many nieces and nephews.
