The BLuebonnet Trail flowers
weren’t at their best, the weather
wasn’t at its beat, but the arts and
crafts booths were superb. And, rain
or shine, the craftspeople stuck it out
so you could enjoy their items. But
the 1988 Bluebonnet Trail is history
and it is now time to start thinking
about the Labor Day Barbecue.
Ida Williamson is now starting to
collect for the big flea market that
she oversees each year, and that is
one of the favorite spots for visitors.
She is asking that you start now to
gather together your used, but
usable items for that big event and
either take them to the Red Barn any
Thursday afternoon between 1 and 4
p.m. or call her for delivery to her
home. Her number is 793-6186.
Also, the crafts bazaar booth is
always so lovely, and so unique, that
the Thursday afternoon ladies are
working hard already for new and
unique items. But there are only
about eight or 10 who have been
doing the lions’ share of the work
and they would certainly appreciate
with Ma paintings of blueb
show.

John's
Hitchin' Post
By John Kuykendall
Tomatoes are the home gardener’s
favorite vegetable and some care and
management can help produce heal-
thier plants and more tomatoes.
Caged or staked tomato vines
produce better than those that grow
on the ground. In addition, it helps to
eliminate fruit contact with the
ground which results in rotten areas
on the tomatoes. Mulching aids in
conserving moisture and in main-
taining a more constant moisture
supply. Fluctuation in moisture is
the main cause of blossom end rot.
Each year we have problems with
plants turning yellow and dying from
the bottom up. Thia results mainly
from two fungal diseases, greay leaf
spot and early blight. Spraying every
week to 10 days with Kocide 101
does a good job of controlling these
diseases.
Using high phosphorus fertilizer
early usually helps tomatoes to set
fruit. After a good crop is set,
regular feeding with a small amount
of balanced fertilizer keeps plants
healthy and productive.
Gardeners who have had trouble
with nematodes should try Better
Boy, Big Set, Bonus, Jackpot,
Celebrity, and Small Fry aa all of
these tomatoes are nematode resis-
l tant.
it if any of you craftsfolks out there
(men or women) could make some
items to be donated to the bazaar for
sale at the big event. Also, they
would like new ideas for items. So,
ifyou can be of help, please call Vada
Stum at 793-2421 or attend the every
Thursday afternoon crafts gathering
from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Red Brn.
The Flashbacks were rehearsing in
the Red Barn last week, while the
VFD was drilling in the field outside
and I want to tell you that I was
impressed. They were in full gear, lit
a huge fire in a trough and went after
it with vigor and assurance. It gives
one confidence in their abilities and
appreciation of the work they do to
keep us safe in case of fire.
Calendar of Events
