AUSTIN — Texas hunters harves-
ted almost 50 percent more bobwhite
quail during the 1987-88 hunting
season than the year before, accord-
ing to the Texas Parks and Wildlife
Department's annual small game
harvest survey.
Department officials stressed that
these proposed changes are contin-
gent upon U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service review on June 22.
Ron George, dove program leader,
said the proposed bag limit for the
special whitewing season is for an
aggregate daily bag of 12 white-win-
ged, mourning and white-tipped
doves that could include no more

of the state’s quail range, biologists
said.
Generally good hunting conditions
during 1987 also were reflected in
the estimated number of participa-
ting hunters. The 239,900 hunters
going after bobwhites represented a
17 percent increase over the previous
year's turnout, while almost 91,000
hunters hunted scaled quail, for a 36
percent increase.
The South Texas Plains led all
ecological regions of the state in
bobwhite quail harvest, with 68,000
hunters taking more than 738,300
quail. The Rolling Plains of West
and North-Central Texas also had an

provision for later closing dates for

technical programs for the Wildlife
Division, said the bobwhite harvest
climbed from approximately 1.5
million in 1986 to more than 2.2
million in 1987. The harvest of blue
or scaled quail jumped more than
100 percent during the same period,
from 312,700 in 1986 to 636,800 in
1987.

Eight netters from Llano traveled
to the Odessa Tennis summer sport
camp June 19 for one week of
intensive tennis training. Stroke
development, physical fitness,
mental tennis training, drill and
match play was stressed.
Those attending are Cherylle
Inman, Dana and Delight Stovall,
Nickie Dearing, Shanda Almond,
Jeannie Stovall, Priscilla Walker and
Cody Spivey.

The mourning dove harvest of 5.3
million birds was almost a five
percent increase over 1986 when the
harvest was slightly over five
million. Other species, the estimated
harvest and the percent increase
over 1986 were: rabbit, 656,900 (10
percent); squirrel, 1 million (18
percent); spring turkey, 43,000 (14
percent), and pheasant, 81,300 (8
percent).
Harvest of other species included
prairie chicken, 2,300 woodcock,
10,900; snipe, 15,000; rails, 300; and
gallinules, 3,600.
