The Employment Resources Sum-
mer Youth Employment Program
(SYEP) began on Monday, June 13.
with 65 youths participating.
Employment Resources is under
the supervision of Williamson/Bur-
net County Opportunities Incorpor-
ated and is guided by the Rural Area
Private Industry Council. All em-
ployment resources programs are
funded under the Job Training Part-
nership Act (JTPA).
The SYEP is designed to give
eligible youths 14-21 work experi-
ence and learn job skills which will
help them in their future employ-
ment. The participants work at
various worksites in Burnet and
Llano Counties. The worksites are
federal, state, local governments as
well as other non-profit organiza-
tions.
Two of the 65 participants are
attending the Youth Opportunities
Program (YOU) at Southwest Texas
State University. This is a 60-day
work study program.
Nineteen of the participants will be
working 16 hours per week and
attending accelerated education
classes 14 hours per week. These
classes will be held in Burnet and
Marble Falls. Nancy Allen will be
teaching the class in Burnet and Sue
Gregory-Stout will be teaching in
Marble Falls.
Forty-four participants will be
working 30 hours per week at their
worksites. They will be supervised
by the worksite supervisor. Both the
participants and supervisors have
attended an orientation. All partici-
pants are paid minimum wage by the
JTPA.
The 1988 Summer Youth Employ-
ment Program has more than
doubled the 1987 program. In 1987
there was one student in the YOU
program, 20 worksites and 30 partic-
ipants as compared to two students
Farnum. A retirement party was
held for Waiter Milliorn shortly after
the conclusion of the commissioners
court meeting.
Held two votes on the request by
the library board to add another 18
hours so the library could have two
full-time employees. Commissioner
Ross Bauman announced the request
had been extended to 21 hours and
made a motion to grant the extens-
ion, which was seconded by Leonard
Grenwelge.
After further discussion it was
unanimously agreed the matter
should be held in abeyance until
budget discussions. A second
motion to give the library an
additional $1,600 to finish out the
fiscal year resulted in a split vote
with Bauman and Grenwelge voting
in favor and Pete Overstreet and Rex
King opposing.
"Let’s leave it at that," said
Judge Miller who declined to break
the tie.
Approved the changing the name
of a street in Point Telia subdivision
to Easy Street and establish block
numbers.
Appointed Diane Gage to the
Llano County Child Welfare Board to
replace Carolyn Goodson, who had
resigned.
Approved the application for
expansion of the Llano County
landfill site at Kingsland.
