We again arose early next day,

only 30 miles from New York,

Miller is his man for the second
spot on the ticket. The selection
was no surprise—since he had
been reported the front-runner.
Miller is a hard-hitting cam-
paigner. But he’s also seen as a
ticket-balancer since he’s an eas-
terner and Goldwater’s a Wes-
terner. And Miller is a Catholic
while Goldwater is Episcopalian.
Miller’s choice means the GOP
National Chairman post is open.
Goldwater aides indicate the
senator may have a surprise
choice for this spot.

SAN FRANCISCO, July 16.—
This is a city of conartsts—vivid,
historical, important contrasts.
Here are some of them:
CONTRAST N 01—When I
was here in 1945, San Francisco
was giving birth to the fulfill-
ment of man’s greatest dream__
the ensurement of peace. The
Charter of the UN was being
written.
A great Republican—Senator
Arthur Vandenberg of Michigan
was a member of the delegation,
and helped to forge the documnt
which was to realize man’s
dream.

There was Republican-Demo-

effort to fulfill man’s age old

The suspicions, the divisive
fears came from V. M. Molotov,
the sour, dour Foreign Minister
of Soviet Russia, who glowered,

Today in the UN—the Rus-

Describing his visit to Moscow
—Eisenhower said “we stood for
five hours on The Tomb while
the show went on. None of us
had ever witnessed anything re-
motely similar. The groups of
performers were dressed in the
colorful costumes of their re-
spective countries and at times
thousands of individuals per-
formed in unison. Every kind
of folk dance, mass exercise,
acrobatic feat, and athletic ex-
hibition was executed with
Tawless precision and apparent-
ly—with greatest enthusiasm.”
Later as President—it was
the same Eisenhower who went
much further than Truman,
Kennedy or Johnson by invit-
ing Khrushchov to a complete
tour of the US and for friendly
talks at Camp David. No other
American President has gone
this far.
