Soon, the tax office will mail notices of the new proposed
assessed value on your property. These notices will
include not only the proposed value, but also figures that
are required by law, which may be misleading to you.
Stated in the notice, will he your 1978 amount of taxes
based on last year's assessed value and tax rate. In
addition, a statement of what your 1979 taxes would be If
the old 1978 tax rate were applied to the new 1979 proposed
assessed value. In the past few weeks, you have heard
many of your public officials stating this will not be your
taxes for 1979. The 1979 budget for your county would have
had to more than double in the past year for this to be
warranted. The governing body of your taxing jurisdiction
will determine a new 1979 tax rate, based on the new total
amount of property value which will satisfy the 1979
approved budget. This tax rate may only be.set after the
County Board of Equalization reviews and gives final
approval to everyone’s property value which make up the
new 1979 tax roll.
While the County has not officially set a ratio of
assessment or lax rate, the Commissioner's Court
' believes that the ratio will drop from 30 percent to 28
percent and the tax rate from 81.22 to 81.02 of the
value. . “500
