FRIDAY JANUARY 14 1887.
Thk Inaugural ball has set Waco ard
Austin In a fever of excitement. Th
other cities of tbe stste preserve tbelr
eqnlllbrulm.
The country feels relieved. Garland
announces that with the close of his
present term of office he will retire to
the shades of private life.
The state messsgrs to the several leg-
islatures emphasize the Importance thnt
the labor question has assumed during
the rear.
The refusal of the people of Texas to
relieve the wants of their starving fel
low citizens will do more to discourage
immigration Into this state than a
whole army of Immigration agents can
possibly counteract.
Tub Austin Dispatch of December 30.
1886 and January 6 7. 8 and 10 came to
hand in yesterday’- mail.all right side ur
for care. The w»- a of that mailing clerk
are like those of providence “very mis
terioua and past finding out.’’
Thk Waco Examiner charges the
criticism of the Fort Worth papers In a
certain spectacular show to the qua'it)
of the spectacular legacies rather than to
moral scruples.
The prediction is made that tbis is to
be an investigating legislature. In tbU
respect it will not differ from any other.
It Is tbe principle of every legislature to
prove bow wise they are by demon
striding tbe foolishness of tbelr pre-
decessors. Wait until the recotd 1»
made up.
£Qt EEN Vic sends £5O and her por-
trait to each of the wards of the Long-
more hospital for incurables at Edin-
burgh. Tbe question Is: Does she de-
duct tbe price of the portraits from the
original sum intendd or Is that a free
gift over and above the£so. Vic always
was very economical.
Those skidaddling Ohio senators who
bolted into Kentucky in order to defeat
action and organization among tbe re-
publicans. are back again In tbeir seats
endeavoring to bulldoze the legislature
out of ts rights as a body with a re-
publican majority. They can’t do it.
you know.
The demand of the state republican
convention for a stare reformatory has
been heard In tbeears of tbe democracy
and the state Journals almost witbout
exception are echoing the cry. The
practice of corrupting criminals through
prl»on systems has gone on long enough;
let the attempt now be made to reform
them.
What is Texas going to do about re-
lieving tbe necessities of those 30 0(0
starving cit Zens in her northwest bor-
ders. whose cry has come up before th
people and entering in at one ear bas
gone out at the other? Charitable con
•Iderations may be shelved but the
Opinions of the other states of this union
can not be llghily set aside. Self resptzt
d< mauds a response.
The combinations to raise the prices
of food and fuel are attracting the at-
tention of the c urts and in nearly every
Instance bare been branded as unlaw-
ful. Tbis will be the beginning of
the end of so much speculation In tbe
necessities of life. Courts and legisla-
tures -how some laudable disposition to
come to tbe rescue of the p ople and re-
lief may be confidently hoped for in
time from these sour'es.
Ln calculating upon tbe political chan-
ce and changes by which the presiden-
tial chair of tbis nation is filled let it be
borne In mind that tbe traditions of this
government are all settled that no one
other tban a soldier or a lawyer can bold
the p si lion of chief magistrate. Of tbe
twentv-two distinguished gentlemen
who have occupied that boi orable place
five have been soldier* sod the rem ln
Ingsevente n have belonged to the egal
fraternity. Cleveland is the fourth law-
yer since a soldier occupied tbe seat but
as two of these Garfield and Arthur
fill-d but one t- rm tbe chance* are In
favor of another lawyer In 1888.
The press of the country comments
quit t favorably upon the arrangement
made by tbe Boston Herald whereby all
profits of the concern after paying a
five per cent dividend upon the Invest-
ment are divided am >ng tbe employes
according to tbe wages paid. Tbe gain
In this direction Is ma ilfold and reaches
much farther than tbe mere establishing
of pleasant relations between ihe em
ployers a- d their workmen. Laroche
Job rut the French paper maker who
has worked for years on the co operative
plan says that “plant two mills with
equal capital and otherwise similar
in all respects side by side and let one
wolf on the co operative plan giving a
share In the profits to Its woiklnpmen
and It will drive the other out of the
field because It will always have its
pi. k of the workmen.” Godin tbe great
Iron manufacturer of Guise France
Says tbat in bis establishment tbe Im-
provements Invent d and patented by
workmen have greatly multiplied since
tbe co-operative system was applied
although tbe profit* go into a common
fund. Our own American manufactur-
ers entertain the same view and do not
think fixed wages carry with them any
particular incentive to excellence. The
sharing of tbe profits of manufacturing
establishments has always been followed
by the beet possible results and as these
become more fully understood the prac
tlce of wage paying will very largely
cease and the co-operative plan come
into general use. When II does strikes
will be a thing of the past.
Gov. Irelands statement that tbe
rich do not bear their proposition of
taxes levied for tbe maintenance of the
government is as true elsewhere as in
Texas. Phil. Armour lias property In
Kansas city acnordlng to bis own state-
ment worth $4800000. and yet be pays
taxes on less than one per cent of tbat
amount; the actual figure according to
tne rolls is $37 000. Pull la a good Pres-
byterian tut some one lied awfully
when bis property returns were made to
tbe assessor.
Txxa- tax receipts are drawn so as to
sbow the specific purpose for which
each amount Is levied. Taking advan-
tage of this Information the principal
tax-payers In Presidio county wl 1 quite
generally refuse to pay taxes levied to
pay the bonds tor the new courthouse at
Marfa. This action will not be con-
demned by those who are familiar with
the peculiar methods employed to rush
ibat county seat and court bouse ques-
tion through. Tbe lesson though an
expensive one may be worth to
Texts all it coats Marfa. Snap Judg-
ment has an unpleasant snap to it. like
a rubber band released from Its tension.
Of the real benefits of Francis Mur-
phy's work as a temperance reformer
there is no question. His efforts are in-
telligently directed towards curing
drunkenness by Inducing drunkards to
otislaln from tbe use of intoxicants.
Wherever be has gone reformation has
followed. There are no political com-
plications no movements for political
results no aping of legislative methods
simply a plain direct statement of tbe
evils fol owing tbe abuse of liquor and a
manly appeal to those who in ulge in
tbe habit to refrain and take a pledge of
total abstinence. His work in Cincin-
nati has accomplished more in three
weeks than all other methods have
worked in three years. The only pro-
hibition be advocates is the man’s own
personal prohibition. This is eflective.
Texas revenue collectors can take
some lessons from Unele Sam’s servants
that will he of practical benefit to the
state. Tbe comptroller’s report shows
645 liquor dealers in the third revenue
district paying state license to 1059 pay-
ing federal license. Where is the natural
and Inalienable right of the states gone
to? This trampling under foot by tbe
high hand of the national government
the sacred right of the state to tax as
many liquor dealers as the general gov-
ernment should be put a stop to. Tbe
right of tbe state is being trampled
upon.
The suggestion of the governor’s mes-
sage that tbe short-term criminals be
put to work upon the county roads and
tbat It be made obligatory upon tbe
counties to so employ them. Is one
which will meet with general approval
The Light directed attention to tibs
matter many moons ago. The legisla-
ture will consult the interest of its con-
stituents by paying beed thereto.
Bradstreet’s reports show an easier
money market In all sections of tbe
country Cbicsgo having the moat strin-
gent maiket and the most active de-
mand owing to tbe delayed receipts
from the interior. Tbe failures for the
first week of 1887 were below those of
last year ai d 1885. Tbe bank clearings
show an excess of 30 per cent over pre-
vious week. Tblrty-two rail wave show
increased earnings of $8 000 000 for tbe
yearju-t closed over prevtou one. and
prices are get erally ru-talned the whole
country over. Iron and cotton and
refined sugars are slightly advanced.
On tbe whole the trade conditions show
healthy symptoms of Increase rather
than reveal the existence of such In-
crease.
Judge T» crman. confessedly the first
man Io the ranks of tbe deuiocratlc par-
ty is the man of all others whom the
democracy persistently side-tracks. He
Is tbe ablest and at the same time the
most Incorruptible man among tbe dem-
ocratic boats. For this reason perhaps
he stands no show of being nominated.
He is too little a demagogue and too
much a statesman to be favorably con-
sidered by tbe party that nominated and
elected Grover Cleveland.
The democracy are not folly agreed
among themselves. One died In the
wool T.xas journal affirms that the
claim of Logan’s friends that bis rheu-
matism was contracted in the armyls tbe
very thinnest of all pretences while Its
Deitjdxor neighbor affirms that “it is con-
ceded tbat Gen. Logan contracted tbe
disease of which he died by exposure in
tbe armv and that bls widow la con-
sequently entitled to a pension under
the law.” This is democratic unity of
which tbe stalwarts can take tbeir
choice having paid their money.
Cleveland. Hewitt and Hill are the
democratic trinity of New York state In
whom all presidential possibilities cen-
ter. The bourbons know tbat they must
carry New York or die at the polls in
1888. Who «an carry the state for them
Is the question of questions. They had
better turn their attenilon to Conkling.
He is the only man who can prevent
New Y< rk going republican next gen-
eral election If Blaine Is nominated.

An interesting letter from Mr. John W
Weeks superintendent of DeKalb Pauper
Home:
From a feeling of gratitude and a desire to
benefit others I voluntarily make this state-
ment: I have great reason to bethankful
that I ever heard of B. B. 8. as I know what a
blessing it has been to me. I have suffered
with Bronchial Catarrh for a number of years.
Six months ago I was taken with a severe pain
In right ear which In a few days began to dis-
charge matter with terrible and almost un-
bearable palpitation and all sorts of noises In
my head. In ten days after the commence-
ment of discharge and pa n in my ear I began
to grow deaf and In six weeks I was so deaf
thatl could not hear thunder.
1 was then compelled to use conversation
tube and It was often that T could not hear
wilb the tube. I then commencing taking B.
B. B and th*» running of my ear ceased run-
ning in live weeks and can n w hear wltho”.t
the tube. My general health has improved
palpitation ceased and feel like a new being
ana appreciate the benefit I have receive d
from B B. B. (made In Atlanta Ga ) with
gratitude to God and thankfulness to the Pro-
prb tors for such a medicine. I cheerfully rec
ommend It to all who are afflict d with deaf-
ness and catarrh. Try it; persevere in its use
and you will be convinced of 1t« value.
