Millionaire Macky’s Pauper Patron.
From Gilboa Monitor ]
Thirty years ago there lived in the wilds of
Shandaken Ulster county.two bright little
boys. An uncle of these two boys a jolly
kind-hearted Irishman was living at this place
and although a poor man he thought it would
be a fine thing to give the boys an education
and acting upon this generous idea the boys
were brought to this place and placed in the
Gilboa (N.Y.) Academy under the instruction
of the Rev. C. Bogarduswhere they learned
their first lessons in school .books. To-day
that uncle is an aged pauper in the Ulster
county poor-house while one of the boys is
none other than Mackay the California mill
ionaire.

vember is 5.96° hotter; December 1° hot-
ter. This summer (iBs>2) will be hotter yet.

clouded equatorial sun.

Clara Louise states that when her present
engagement with Max Strakosch ends (May
25) she will positively and forever retire from
the operatic stage. In Philadelphia she drew
a $7OO house while Gerster drew $lBOO.
It is intimated that Max Strakosch has in
view the formation of a strong German oper-
atic organization for next year and the favor
Herr Neumann’s company has found in Lon-
don appears to indicate a success for a similar
company in an American tour next season.

Olive Logan says: “Devotedly as
the Queen loves all her children it is
perhaps not too much to say that
Beatrice is the apple of that royal
mother’s eye. Her constant compan-
ion for mure than 20 years it is no
wonder the Queen almost worships her
youngest child her baby. Sad for the
great lady will it be when ‘Bee’
marries. And speaking of the recent
royal wedding she says: “The golden
apple for beauty was carried off very
easily by the Princess Victoria of He-
se a charming blonde of 19 daughter
of the late Princess Alice of England.
The Princess Victoria wore a pink
toilet* and pink train and held an
immense bouquet of roses in her hand.
The bride is the tallest Princess in the
royal family a very well-grown brunette
with sharply pencilled eyebrows fine
dark brown eyes and dark hair.”
At a recent Washington reception
the tea was made according to the
Russian fashion :A “sarnivar ”of bright
brass contained the water which was
kept at the boiling point by a cylinder
filled with burning charcoal which
down the centre of the “sarnivar” or
water urn. The tea was in a teapot
and a cup of boiling water was drawn
from the ‘ ’sarnivar” poured over the
dry tea and immediately poured into a
cup. This was repeated for each per-
son who accepted an invitation to take
a cup of tea. Not a moment was al-
lowed for drawing yet each cup was
