ZOE'S SUICIDE.
An Ineffectual Attempt made to Save
her Life by Resorting to
Resection.
Yesterday afternoon about three
o’clock the clear report of a pistol shot
was heard upon East Commerce street
and upon enquiry being made P was
found that a young woman known as
Zoe Johnson and as Zoe Campbell the
reputed wife of Wirt Campbell a gam-
bler. had made a deteimined attempt at
suloide. at No 525 East Commerce
street by placing a pistol against her
right aid and firing It. Medical aid was
called and after some delay Dr Lowry
came. It was then found that the ball
had pa-sed through the lnt»-Btine« and
hail lodged in the hip. The woman
was slowly bleeding to death and was
evidently repenteiit of her suicidal folly
for she <lt Bin dto be saved. Drs. Cup-
pies and G. Graham Watts were culled
Infor consultation and it was decided
that rese tlon of tbe bowels was the
only filing tiiar could save her. and even
then under oircumstanoes there was
faint hopes of her recovery. The deli-
cate operation was performed f r the
first time in the south and the Inj ired
part of ihe Intestines about six inches
was removed. Apparently all seemed
as favorably as could be expected but
patient sank and at l:0o o'clock this
morning she expired.
The fatal shot was fired so close to tbe
body that it set fire to her clothing and
powder burned her Intestines. The
wound so inflicted was a fatal one
though In some few cases life has been
saved by res-ction.
The deceased was a pretty woman
about 25 vears of age and possessed of
a magiilflcent figure. She has not been
in the city long and was of the demi-
monde sisterhood. The motive for her
fatal act is said to lie in the fact that she
and her reputed husband Campbell
quarrelled on Saturday night and that
he left her to go to Galveston.

1 had a dream the other night
I thought 'twas on the street.
1 dreamt 1 saw a policeman

I saw a politician who acted on the square.
1 saw a botiatide exhihltion
At the Bexar eou ty fa r;
1 dreamt that the Mississippi
Was a lute running so earn.
And that our city tethers
Made our sew-erag-.- ull serene;
I dreamed that our sheriff
Had tu neo over a new leaf.
And now was feeding entoken
Instead of common be- f.
I dreamed that the dudes were all strung up
Betwixt the ea th and sky.
And 1 s-w a tempera ce preacher
'Take a drink upon the sly;
1 dreamed that our worklngmau
Was getting Urst-class pay
Instead of that poor little sum
Of 90 cents a day.
I dreamed that all the ladies
Had teased to make a mash.
And that our landlords ceased
To give us that mystery - hey call hash.
I dreamt that nil the old maids
Were needed in the town
And that our ex policeman
Had joined tbe circus as a clown.
I dreamed that I was rich and fat
That fat men all grew lean;
Then I awoke and found I was broke—
And It was a Texas dream.
