AN UNACCEPTABLE VERDICT—BUKIKII BY I.AN-

I’alestine. August 7. —The verdict in the
Cook murder case as reported in the Express
special from that place was assuredly not re-
ceived here “with cheers” but in a totally
ditterent manner. Palestine had anything but
applause for a verdict which was a total sur-
prise to this communi'y.
Baker killed at Milam Junction on the In-
ternational yesterday was buried to-night
here and the funeral was one of the most im
pressive seen here for a long time. I’ln
liearse surrounded by railroad men carrying
lanterns passed through the thick darkness
and out to the cemetery on the outskirts of the
town where amid the glimmering rays of
the upheld lanterns the last solemn rites were
performed.

To the Voter* of the 10th Congreasioiiai
District
Austin Tex. August Ist 1882.
I am a candidate for the U. S. Congress
from your congressional district composed 01
the counties of Travis Comal Blanco Bexar
Medina Bandera. Uvalde Kinney Edwards
Kerr Kendall Gillespie Kimble. Burnett
Llano Mason Menard Lampasas McCul-
loch Concho Coleman Runnels Bastrop.
Williamson Crocket and San Saba.
My candidacy is without regard to party
in any way and when elected 1 propose a:
c ongressman to be bound by no party caucus
hut to support those measures only which may
best serve the in(erest of the people of this
district of Texas and of the country at large.
\ 011 ar« aware that in making the pi esent
ipportiontment of the state for congressmen
at the late session of ttie legislature the ma
jority of that body insolent with unre-
strained power and therefore contemp-
tuous of the wishes of the people
boldly announced that it was made with a view
to secure democra'ic majorities in all the dis-
tricts and to suppress the votes of the oppo-
sition. Hence the counties of this district
though inhabited by people of the most diverse
pursuits and contlicting interests were strung
together to secure a majority over all opposi-
tion of upwards of three thousand —sufficient
is they hoped to ensure their control.
Owing to this arrangement of the district it
is made a difficult *nd ULofiogs one to can-
vass but 1 expect to visit each county of i
before the election and to then address you in
person. Due notice of my canvass giving
times and places will be published.
Very Respectfully.
Edmund J. Davis.
