RUDOLPH KLEBERG.
Although I never saw his face.
But lately learned his name;
In one brave act of his I trace
Some marks methinks of fame.
A man who to his duty true
Would not unjustly deal
With any here with partial view
To serve a party’s weal.
Who harbors in his manly breast.
As well such action shows
No thought save how his country best
Through him may wrong oppose.
Then honors to his race and nation
For giving such a son
To strive for us In wise relation
That justice may be done.
And unto him who thus had nerve
To try with boldest action
How best the laws and land to serve
In spite of clamorous faction.

THE SANGEBFEST OPENS
BEFORE A LARGE APPRECIATIVE
AUDIENCE AT THE OPERA HOUSE.
The Dallas Frohslnn. tbe Houston Lleder-
kranz Austin Maennerchor
Saengerbund Mixed Chorus
and Orchestra Appear.
The Saengerfest opened last night and
the first of Its series of concerts was giv-
en In the Grand opera house. Every
seat in tbe bouse was occupied and
many were glad to get standing room
and all bad the appearance of a gala
day.
The stage had been altered for the
occasion. The scene presented was that
of a sylvian dell just tbe place for a fes-
tival. showing in the distance ornament-
al grounds and a huge golden lyre. A
raised gallery was added so tbai tbe
singers could be seen and see. Tbe or-
chestra was ranged lu front and then
came the ladies charmingly and simply
dressed and in the rear were tbe males.
The effect of this arrangement was
beautiful and called forth much en-
comium.
Soon after the appointed hour Prof.
Carl Beck appeared on rhe dais ap-
pointed for him and raising his baton
the concert was commenced by an or-
chestral performance of the overture
from "Fidelio” which was effectively
rendered. Then the mixed chorus ren-
dered Mueoke’s “Gott Gruesse Dich”
and Rbeinburger’s"Die Sterne Am Him-
mel.” Both pieces were well sung but
it is questionable whether tbe last se-
lection was not tbe best sung piece dur-
ing the evening. Tbe delightful selec-
tions by the orchestra “Intermezzo u.
Valse lente” and “Pizzicate Beides Aus
Dem Ballet Sylva” followed. The beau-
tiful melody exquisite harmony and ar-
tistic rendition of the pieces especially
tbe latter raised tbe enthusiasm of tbe
audience and commanded an encore
which was given with equal success.
Then followed tbe attraction of tbe
evening Louise Vances taanslation of the
ancient Danish legend “The Erl King’s
Daughter set to Neil W. Gade’s music
having the following characters: Erl
Kings daughter (soprano) Mies Hortense.
Jones; Olli's mother’s (alto) Miss
Marie Lacoste; Oilf (baritone) Mr. C.
H. Mueller.
The ballad is romantic and contains
some really fine music but the LtGHT
thinks that a better selection could have
been made that would have pleased tbe
audience belter and have been more
consistent with the quality and natural
calibre of tbe principal singers. More-
over considerable part of the beauties
of tbe ballad were lost for tbe want of
effective characteristic costumes and ac-
tion. Yet at tbe same time It must say
that having regard to all circumstances
the music was well executed. Miss
Jones sang ber music in a very artistic
manner but her nervousness was appar-
ent atid .probably from this cause she
failed to give life to tbe selection. Miss
Marie Lascoste’s alto was equally
well sung and was effec-
tive although at times she broke off
rather 100 abruptly and had a tendency
to be a little chnrch-music-itiid. The
lady was suffering from a cold and
therefore labored under disadvantages
in the execution of ber music. Mr.
Mueller's fine baritone was beard to ad-
vantage in bls selections and bis music
was well sung. All these singers were
well received and liberally applauded
for their laudable efforts and were the
recipitents of many beautiful bouquets.
I bis closed tbe first part and then a
brief recess was taken.
The s cond part opened with Ambrose
Thomas delightful overture from “Mig-
non” which was so well played by the
orchestra as to elicit an encore and this
being given tbe audience wanted mure
The Texas Saengerbund sang Wagner's
“An Die Kunst” in good style and this
was followed by Techaikowsky’s choice
morceau the “Andante Cantabile aus
Quatuor (Op 11) for stringed instru-
ments. The beautiful harmony and af-
fective rendition was fully appreciated
and most entliuiastically applauded.
Professor Beck then resigned his posi-
tion to Professor Hans Von Kreissig
director of tbe Dallas Frohslnn and tbe
following members: Dan Ankele S. G.
Raysbott'er Karl Bobny A. Eisenlobr
Berthold Eisenlobr Jim Cole Ben
O’Fabian Robert Bllebbler Carl Fretz
Jos. Lang Dr A. Lengel Joban Marx
Robt. Meister Geo. Meyer Henry Mis-
selhorn Jos. Mieblback Carl Roesseler
Eug. Roeseler Jno. Sebat linsky 8.
Scliiflmann Aug. Schneider Henry
Schneider Geo. Spiegel Henry Stork-
liff Henry Struck. Jos. Leimer
sang the lively selection “O baett ich
ein lluettchen zu eigen” in a most cred-
itable manner securing a deserved en-
core. Then the Frohsin gave place to
ttie Liederkranz of Houston and under
direction of G. Devernoy and the mem-
bers R. Adair F. Ewaloh F. Ewald G.
Sauter P. Schmidt C. Ertz H. Hahn
O. Preuss C. Schwarz A. Bartlingk C.
Appel W. C. Cornltius Wm. Kuss A.
Pion John Roessler A. Dietrich A.
Gruenwald F. Lenk H. G. Tips sang
“The Fruehlings Erwachen” but
the performance was not so
good nor satisfactory as expected.
After this tbe Austin Maennercbor
consisting of P. L. Meyer II Karber A.
Giesen H. Lingkwitz A. P. Assmann
F. Dohnae Charles Schenckeen F. Bas-
tian R. Von Boeokmann H. L. Guen-
ther Geo. Heberer Hermann Pressler
A. Kolme Phil Brockmann G. T. Blan
A. C. Goetcb H. Luckenbacb Paul
Pressler Jacob Biokier Ed Schmetze
Sr. Ed Schmetze Jr. Julius Schmetze
Fred Kallon A. C. Jessen John Mueller
Henry Sohuetze Henry Kluge A. J.
Boekman Charles Domschke under di-
rection of Mr. Walter Tips rendered the
“Chor der Kaiserlicben Krieger from
tbe Oratorium Wolfgang Von Anhalt.”
This was well sang and their tenor was
remarkably strong Mr. Karber’s tenor
being heard as usual above the rest.
Professor Beck then resumed direction
of the festival and the Texas Saenger-
buud sang “In Einen Kuelen Grunde”
and “Jancbzend Eibebt Sich Die
Schoepfung” in a most satisfactory
manner and between these pieces the
orchestra played “Lizt’s second Hun-
garian Rhapsody” as arranged for tbe
orchestra by C. Mueller-Bergbaus
which secured an encore.
The curtain then fell amid loud ap-
plause and there was only one opinion
that was although the first concert
might have little faults taken as a
whole it was a grand success credita-
ble alike to tbe singers of our city and
tbe state.
Beck was warmly com-
mended. and he deserves tbe commeu-
Gation for bis organization and conduct
of tbe Saengerfest and tbe orchestra
was especially praised. A more perfect
and meritorious orchestra was never
heard in this city.
At the matinee this afternoon tbe
Helvetia the Frohslnn tbeMaenn-r-
-chor of San Antonio the Texas S ate
Sangerfest tbe Saengerfest chorus and
the orchestra are before the audience.
This evening the Salamander’s Galves-
ton Saengerbund’s Houston; Gesang
Verein Giddings; tbe Beethoven Maen-
nerchor San Antonio; the state Saen-
gerbund and orchestra will appear in
choice selections and an attractive pro-
gramme is prepared for the audience.
