EVOLUTION.
Hosp etfully itmcrlbe-1 W. A. Stewart
ot Houston county Texas .'
Up from the earth there sprang one day.
Some sprigs of grass all bright and
green.
Whose seed by birds were borne away.
To lands where no such growth had
been.
And In the years that follow on
Upon an Isle by man unknown
These seed beneath another sun
In woods and wilds all rich have
grown.
Ere London was or mighty Rome
That Isle was seen in grass and
flower
Where safely and sweetly birds at
home.
Sang as their parents in Eden’s hour.
But there In time the savage strode.
With conquering tread and grasping
hands
I► r care" awhile his sole abode.
To own and rule her sea girt lands.
Then with the march of time and mind
These learning arts and science rise
And Milton sings to charm mankind.
His sacred songs of Paradise.
And Shakspeare speaks to all the earth
To every heart in deathless words
Thro’ beings to whom his brain gives
birth
All born of seed sown by those birds.
For “flesh Is grass” so some one says
And Milton and Shakspeare on It fed
Oh on the flesh that fed on grass
For man can’t live alone by bread.
Now who but feels how worse than
vein
To eek His mysteries great to solve
Heaven’s chemistry to have made plain
That can prove such so much evolve?
The seed that can a Hamlet rise
A bright and sad Ophelia be
Contains a principle that lies
Too deep for mortal sight to see.
The butterflies that wing their flight
Burst from their cells of larva: low.
But image forth His mystic might
Whose secrets man can never know.
Still observations all. are good
That serve to show analogies
To give the mind some healthy food
For thought on such affinities.
