— Morris pulled off his coat when he got up
to speak last night—like Senator Coke his elo-
quence needs airing.
—Sol Smith had a slim house last night.
Chevalier and Fayette walker and the rest of
troupe attracted all our fun loving citizens.
—C. L. Richey to day obtained permission
to build a house of the value of sboo on the
southwest corner of San Saba and Ravalla sts.
— During the Hancock meeting last night
an old and tried democrat applied to a repub-
lican to take him arouud the corner and kick
him.
—Licenses have been procured for the mar-
riage of John P. King with Miss Mollie J.
Hannon and of Wm. E. Graham with Miss B.
Gills.
—The neck of a horse owned by Louis
Kopp of Kendall county was badly cut by some
unknown person at Stumberg’s yard last
night. t
—The health of the city is by no means
good. Fevers abound mostly malaria and
ague and the doctors are kept exceedingly
busy.
—“lf this is the respectable party" exclaim
ed a new citizen last night at the Chevalier
meeting “then I don’t want anything to do
with it.”
—A. S. Chevalier J. W. Morris Fayette
Walker and Col. Latter of Kansas city spoke
to a Democratic audience on Main plaza last
evening.
—Yesterday two children received severe
vealp wounds from stones which had been
thrown at a pecan tree and which fell upon
their heads.
—The Hancock meeting last night was in-
complete; an attempt was made to secure
Chrysler to speak but the old man had too
much self-respect.
—A general desire is expressed that Prof.
Houzean will again find it convenient to ad-
mit visitors to his observatory and explain the
wonders of the heavens.
—When the gentleman from Misouri in his
speech last night exclaimed “I’ve been to the
I‘enitentrary” the crowd did not wait for him
to finish his sentence but sent up a yell of de-
light
—At the conclusion of the present term of
the Federal court Prince Hal Gosling the U.
S. marshal in this district will send all prison-
ers under sente nee to the penetentiary at Ches-
ter Ills.
—There appears now to be no hope that the
Princess Louisa and the Marquis of Lorne
will visit the city. Britishers who have
been on the qui vive for their appearance are
sadly disappointed.
—Dr. Amos Graves and Dr. Ornelas have
performed a delicate operation upon a gentle-
man who was atilicted with stricture of the
bowels and whose life was then in danger.
I’he patient now is in a fair way for recovery.
—After the Chevalier-Hancock meeting had
proceeded some time last night Chevalier got
a little ashamed of the proceedings and ap-
plied to Joe Foster to suggest a speaker. Joe
replied that he might get a boot-black or two.
—How easy it is to get one’s name in the
paper when one is a member of so many soci-
eties that one has to attend a meeting every
night frequently a meeting of the British asso-
ciation to-day and of the Irish Land League
to-morrow.
—The idea of amalgamating the Alamo li-
brary with the Literary and Debating society
is a good one. At present the library is not
attended to as it should be and its addition to
the Literary and Debating society would in-
vigorate it.
—Where are the Waco debaters and why
are they silent ? is the cry of the literary war-
horses of the Debating society who claim that
they can get no reply from the Wacoitet
hence the joint debate arrangements are at a
standstill.
— The Volksfest central committee at a
meeting a few days since passed resolutions
of condolence with the family of the late B.
Schwarz and chose Mr. C. Louis Wagner as
treasurer of the association a position which
Mr. Schwarz held.
—A buggy was driving along Flores street
yesterday when a wagon came along at full
speed caught the wheel and took it clean off
breaking the axle tree. There was only one
man in the buggy and he fortunately main-
tained his seat and was uninjured.
—lt is confidently asserted that more money
has been expended in this election than in any
previous one and the democrats are groaning
heavily at the taxation imposed upon them by
the democratic executive committee. One
candidate who has been in office several
times says that the taxation and expenses are
rarely equivalent to one year’s salary. When
shall we have purity in these matters and the
best man be selected for office regardless of
politics?

is doubtless now become quite familiar to the

language to H. IL H. Ryder-Taylor. The lan-
guage in question was uttered in the Evening
Light otiice day before yesterday. This morn-
