HAIR HUNG AND BREEZE-SHAKEN.
Brother Guthrie of the Bandera Bugle
has bad an experience. He has been
rattled over the stones like an anti-pau-
per whom nobody owns until he is sore
in his bones. Brother Guthrie did not
understand until now bow a fellow felt
when the Philistines were upon him ; he
knows now. He has left the sheep fold
and wandered away from his own
shepherd and the tang ed-haired ram of
a rival flock has keel-hauled him until
the very marrow of his bones has run
ont like water. The Bugle man usually
can toot his own horn but this time he
has been lifted up on a preacher's horn
and Impaled on a prohibition horn and
his Bugle has been flattened by a fellow
who does not believe tn horns and the
memory thereof is neither pleasant nor
refreshing. The fact Is that Brother
Guthrie Is a decent anti prohibitionist
and he has views on this subject and he
expresses them. There was a barbecue
on the grounds in his vicinage and the
prohibitionists were out In force. A
pair of parsons were doing duty on the
prohibition watchtowers and the wind-
ing of the Bugle on the anti-prohibition
walls was not welcome music In the
•an of tbose;preachers. who would have
taught their master a new method of
treating the wine question bad they
been in Cana at the marriage feast. One
of these ministers was named Sanders a
shepherd of the Baptist flock and he
proved himself a very erooked shepherd
according to the report which
the Bugle man has sent to the
San Antonio Light that the people
may know the things that are done In
darkness. The Bugle editor complains
of the foul language used by this Kev.
expounder of the gospel of shan’t by
the apostles of "cant” and asks this
journal to post the offensive language.
Thia the Light does not deem necessary.
The language is common to t"O many
prohibition speakers and should not be
regarded as singular. Brother Guthrie
is too particular by half. When a min-
ister calls him a "liar” and a "thief” and
wants to “choke him with bis own
filth” and all that Bro. Gutbrie should
consider where it came from just as
the man did when the jackass kicked
him. There is no law against a man
making a fool of himself; none against a
man making a fish woman of himself
and bankrupting Billingsgate. The
things wbleh defile a man are the
things which come out .of bis mouth
not those which enter into bis ears. The
Bugle man cannot be defiled by wbat
come out of Rev. Sanders mouth and be
should not take this matter to heart. It
is certainly to be deplored that all min-
isters of the gospel are not gentlemen
but they are not and that ends it. The
experience of a well clothed man in an
encounter with a sknnk Is not something
to be agitated. The better thing to do
Is to bury the offensiveness. The Bugle
will go right along doing good work In
Bandera county just as though this
thing had not happened and tbe Rev.
Banders will nave the satisfaction of
having shown tbe unsanctified nature
of bis prohibition soul.
CRANFILLIANISM.
There has been considerable curiosity
fait undepressed to understand tbe true
Inwardness of this prohibition campaign
financially considered. It is well
known that tbe prohibitionists in Texas
have flooded tbe state with money.
Their expenses and outlays are enor-
mous. and yet there seems to be no
lank to tbe stream of golden plenty that
pours from their coffers. The mystery
Is solved. They have laid tribute on
other prohibition states for tbe slnnewe
of war. Rev. Cranflll is even now In
Michigan or was recently and met
with great success In bls collecting tour.
At Lake Bluff on tbe Bth Inst his collec-
tion was over $3OO In one contribution.
A report of his speech on that occasion
shows him a most worthy descendant of
Bunyans”Mr. Two Face”and contrasted
with bis "buck nigger”editorial Is a cu-
riosity of ministerial gymnastics. His de-
nunciation of the "nigger” and hie op-
probrious terms as heaped upon him are
fresh in the memory of tills state. In
Michigan Cranflll was In a republican
state where abuse of the colored man Is
not a pasporl to favor. There Cranflll
changes bis face and clasps tbe negro
to his bosom In a spasm of af-
fection that would draw tears from
tbe eyes of a "devil’s darning needle.”
Tbe reverned prohibitionist after
tallying "Texas” and damning “Mason's
and Dixon's line” and trading of!
“Dixie” for "Home .Sweet Home” put
in the following lick: "I be negroes
have not a preacher or a teacher or a
single educated man but what is pro-
nounced for prohibition The ignorant
ones poor fellows ain’t like white men
and can’t be; but they’ve got great big
hearts; if they love you they’ll die for
you and you could not do more than
that If you are white.” This from the
man who two short months ago slan-
dered the republicans of 'lexas and
heaped contumely upon their conven-
tions in which according to bls minis-
terial utterances " the 'valk lide’ of the
b >-Dutch sergeant-at-arms mingled with
the "set down tbar’ of the ignorant nig-
ger door-keeper” is quite a change.
His conversion Is entirely due to lati-
tude and not to any change of heart.
The servant at once of God and Mam-
mon his professions of regard for col-
ored men are all gammon. Ihe fact
only Is alluded to in order to show to
what straits Texas prohibitionists will
resort in order to secure money and
votes to carry on this crusade against a
people’s liberties. That the colored
men in Texas have been roped Into this
thing as Cranflll ssys is too largely
true but bis statement that all their
educated men favor prohibition Is as
tfaVdiea tf®R.y»ositlon of the man who
reach ground on ante to
make the statement. The Light has
the authority of the best posted colored
men in San Antonio for the statement
that in this county two-thirds of the
colored vote will be anti-prohibition
and that two-thirds contains more than
two-thirds of the Intelligence of the
colored voters of the county.
THE BUCKEYE PLATFORM.
The republican platform as adopted
by tbe Ohio state convention at Toledo
yesterday may be thus briefly epitom-
ized: The platform is truly Ameri-
can. It protects American industries by
protective tariff; by a demand for the
restriction of emigration so as to ex-
clude anarchists communists polygam-
ists fugitives from justice insane and
dependent paupers vicious and criminal
classes and contract labor in every form;
asks national control of the elections to
congress; demands large pensions for
soldiers and sailors;extends hearty sym-
pathy to Gladstone and Parnell; would
set apart public lands for actual sett lets
only; denounces the pension vetoes;
asks protection for innocent users of
patent inventions; endorses tbe state ad-
ministration and Foraker’s service; fa-
vors the restriction not the abolishing of
the liquor tratlio; arraigns the democ-
racy for fraud in the 1885 elections; calls
for no discrimination against labor on
the part of corporations and for a trans-
portation as low as is consistent with
justice and heartily endorsed Sherman
for the presidential nomination in 1888.
The tleket presented is— Foraker gov-
ernor; W.C. Lyon lieutenant-governor;
W. T. Spear supreme judge long term;
F. J. Dickman supreme judge short
term; E. W Poe state auditor; J. O
Brown state treasurer; D. K. Watkins
attorney-general; board of public work
C. A. Fleikenger. The platform is sound
as a dollar.
EDITORIAL BREVITIES
Texas will soon have two Fourths of
July to use a Hiberuianism but one of
them will be the Fourth of August.
The Gazette is fairly off the fence. It
cannot even pass by the naturalization
of Mrs. Langtry in distant California
w itbout giving a slap at tbe anti-probi-
bitionists in Texas.
McGariglk is said to be in Chicago
Milwaukie Manitoba and Ontario. The
sheriff who offers $2500 for bis recovery
can take bis choice it is a clear case
of Paddy’s flea.
The Weimar Informer says: "Uncle
Isam says be saw a snake that bad forty-
eight prairie dogs in him.” Uncle Isam
is unknown at this office but is sup-
posed to be a near relative of U-lie Per-
kins.
The democratic journals that assure
tbe party in Ohio of a good tight are
level-beaded. They are very careful to
say nothing of victory. No one ques-
tions tbe tight. On that matter the re-
publicans will not join issue.
Baked meats are the order of the day.
Armour bad a big roast last night to
which all the firemen In Chicago had a
free invite. The roast carcases included
3.500 beeves 500 sheep and 100 hogs.
More than enough fora Texas barbecue.
Au.es G. Thurman lias evidently
sickened of the Ohio democracy. He
puts bis absolute refusal to ever run for
any office on the score of old age but
the lion of the tribe of the Ohio is not
happy In the company of Jackals.
The agony will soon be over. All
that is left of it will be compressed into
one week. Seven days from the read-
ing of this editorial note the pollswill
be nearly closed and the result of this
crusade of the majority against the
rights of the minority will be a matter
of history. Only this much is certain
there has been shed in Texas for a few
weeks.
The New York Sun commenting up-
on the milk and water nature of the
democratic candidate and convention in
Ohio says "Harmony is a great thing
in politics. The word itself has a sooth-
ing effect upon the ear. It sounds well
at conventions when uttered sonorously
and with the proper setting to the
lower jaw." By all of which the Sun
simply means to indicate its disgust at
the anti-Cleveland element of the Ohio
democracy who did not have sand
enough to express their dissatisfaction
with tbe present democratic adminis-
tration.
“Cactus” In the Laredo Times
handles tbe Express of this city with-
out gloves for its publication of that
"Prohibition in Atlanta.” The writer
seems to be of the opinion that the Ex-
press article is only of value to the anti-
prohibitionist on the principle as he puts
it: “That the San Antonio Express Is
such a liar that no one will believe it
when they know the paper is telling
the truth.” That "Cactus” has prickles.
Ottawa Ontario the capital of tbe
moral and pious dominion over on the
other side has unearthed in her pre-
cincts a men of lewdness ami lust a
traffic in young girls o' tender age that
beggars description. The Pall Mall
Gazette revelations are paled into Insig-
nificance. Leading politicians and citi-
zens are involved and the whole capita!
is in an uproar. No less a name that of
Sir Charles Tupper minister of finance
is mentioned among the implicated
ones. Ills almost time that the prohi-
bition fanatics were turning their atten-
tion to the greater ones and leaving the
poor man In peace w itli Ills glass of beer.
Ei>. C. Woodward of the big St Louis
printing company of Woodward A Tier-
nan son of the senior of tbe firm and
under bls dad. business superintendent.
Is about to get bis walking papers for
having married Miss Lizzie Birks a
press feeder in the establishment. Hail
he debauched the girl ami left her a ru-
ined blasted wreck’of womanhood it
would no doubt have made no difference
to the social gang which affects to be
outraged by the mesalliance The mar-
riage knot was tied last January but
the girl retained her place at the press
and only resigned her position this week.
The boy is evidently not a chip of the
old block and has more real manhoiHl
than his old dad.
R. M. T. Hunter bad the honor of
being the youngest speaker who ever
presided over tbe United States House
of representatives. He was only thirty
years anil eight months old when lie
was elected speaker in 1839. Henry
Clay was thirty-four years and seven
months old when he became speaker
Howell Cobb was still younger when
this honor was conferred on him being
only thirty-four years and three months
oht Mr’ Hunter’s death leaves Robt.
C. Winthrop the only man living who
was speaker of the house before Buchan-
an’s administration.
