Springs who has an eight feet deep well
which during tbe drouth has gone dry.

deeper vein hauls water by the barrel a
distance of 18 miles. This Is tbe kind of
enterprise tbat makes a Yankee mad
when be bears of It!
—The Aransas Pass railway has or-
dered a large well dug on their reserva-
tion at Leon Springs to supply tbe
section and the engines with wa-
ter. The well has been sunk a depth
of 40 feet and it Is thought that In about
ten feet more a vein of splendid water
will be struck. The water in tbe I .eon
creek is so flltby and putrid that those
who drink it are seized with fever and
good water is hauled from a long dis-
tance.
Mr. Henry Landauer who has been
absent for some months in Europe re-
turned to San Amonio last night hav-
ing made tbe return trip from Paris to
San Antonio In twelve days.
Paid for His Treachery.
A certain man has been drinking free
beer at tbe Lone Star brewery and it
was understood that he would vote tbe
anti ticket but tbey found It out by un-
doubted evidence that he had gone back
on tbetn. Yesterday he went to the
brewery for bis usual allowance of beer
wben tbe men ducked him In a large tub
and turned tbe hose on bim. He be-
lieves now in tbe prohibition of water
for he got too much of tbat innocent
beverage.
Peculiar Divorce Case.
Mrs. Made lane Faucon has filed a pe-
tition in tbe district court asking for a
divorce from her husband Eugene Fau-
con. In ber petition she alleges that
she whs married to Faucon in Parle
France in 1836; some time afterwards
her husband left ber and came to Amer-
ica. In 1859 she went in search of him
and found bim in New Orleans There
tbey resumed cohabitation and then
came here in 1834 since which time they
have lived here. She now claims that
be has been guilty of desertion cruelty
and excesses on which ground she asks
divorce. Only one child now aged 46
and married was tbe issue of this mar-
riage.
Oft for Galveston.
A very large and happy crowd of ex-
cursionists left this morning over tbe
San Antonio and Aransas Pass new route
to Galveston which included many
prominent citizens. The party will
travel overtbe very fine country through
which the road runs spend Sunday on
theses shore and return home on Tues-
ay night. It is said that a series of
these cheap excursions to tbe sea side
are to be organized.

John Tobin alias Tom Smith who Is
now serving out bls fine of $5O in jail
will be taken before tbe grand jury and
be investigated as to bis guilt or inno-
cence of robbing tbe Adams bouse and
attempted robbery of tbe Mahncke hotel.
Perhaps another charge will need look-
ing after also that of robbery of several
of tbe guests of the Swiss House on
Soledad street who were robbed about
the time Tobin stopped there in com-
pany with a Mexican woman wbom be
passed ofi for bls wife. He has been
Identified as the man but tbe woman
undoubtedly bis confederate can not be
found.
Perhaps Mrs. Roe’s boarders might
look at the gentleman now and see if he
is not the man who went through
them.
Uniform Rank K. P's
Another new division of tbe Uniform
Rank of tbe Knights of Pythias la being
organized bere and will be instituted
on August 18th. A number of
prominent Knights of Pythias have
joined It and there Is every reason to be-
lieve that the division will be a credit-
able one. Both companies will shortly
go into drill in view to taking part In
tbe Inter-State drill to be held here
next year.

clerical force now necessary to work the
Aransas Paes railroad the present gen-
eral office is inadequate for its accommo-
dation and more commodious offices are
being fitted up in the fifth story of the
Maverick Bank building. When these

be better adapted for the business.
