What Was It?
Pistol shots were heard on Sunday night in
the vicinity of KH and at the colored church
across the San Pedro. The latter was followed
bv a scream but the police have failed to trace
the shooters or any result of the tiring.
What Does it Mean ?
Officers Peay and Bishop have visited all the
houses of prostitution in the city and taken
the names of all the inmates. It is said that
this is the initiative of a crusade against the
demi-monde of the city but no information of
an authentic character can be obtained.
Capitalists Coming
Mr. T. 11 Glenneditor of the Prairie Farmer
ol Chicago who was here last season in the in-
terest of his paper writes to Stephen Gould
that he was so satisfied wi'h his last trip that he
will short!v re-visit San Antonio and will lie
aec .mpatiied by several capitalists who will be
prepared for investment.
Another Child in a Ditch.
A child named Hamilton Dix son of Mr. B.
W. Dix aged three years fell in the ditch on
Sunday and would probably have licen drowned
but lor the presence of mind of his eight-yeai-
uld brother Eugene who eaught ami held hint
by the clothes at the same time crying for
assistance. Friends came to his aid ami the
chihl was rescued.
A Rare Chance.
The sale of city lots in front of Hord’s hotel
on Mam plaza will be continued from day to
day commencing at io o'clock a. in. The lots

The Federal Gram! Jury returned 2ii indict-
ments to-day. Among them are named L
Huppertz late assistant postmaster for em-
bezzlement; H. J. Phelps clerk in the collect-
or’s office at Laredo embezzlement and Philip
Palmer an influential stock man of Kinney
county perjury.
In diM-harging the jury Judge Turner said it
was one of the best ever organizes!.
Marshal Gosling arrested Messrs II J.Pheltw*
ami Philip Palmer this morning and placed
them under fllHt lauids.
Judge Turner is now trying the sheep con-
tract suit of Severance v<. Carlin involving a
claim of several thousand dollars.

—The city phvsieian reports II deaths last
week and his report shows that pneumonia
and consumption numla-r many victims.
The new courthouse should have a wood
block pavement in trout of it. This elegant

tier Hall lust night somewhat scared the Hook
and ladder boys and they laid on the hose in

The gambling saloons have abandoned the
electric lights. This would indicate that the
discomfiture of the sports is greater than it

The Alamo street railway company Is re-
ported to he making another effort to s- cure a
franchise to operate and are meeting with
but little encouragement.

-The demand for electric lights in busi-
ness houses is increasing. Therein no reason
why San Antonio should not tie as well illumi-
nated as other prosperous cities.

Light with a handsome book descriptive of
