Phil. Sheridan Passed Through.
General Phil. Sheridan passed through tin-
city last Saturday on his way to Laredo. It
was known that he was coming here but his
arrival was not expected at such an early date
by more than one or two persons. He was
met at the depot by General Augur who ac-
compunied him South. Yesterday morning
they arrived at Laredo and proceeded to Fort
Mclntosh where an ordnance salute was ac-
corded them. At 5 o'clock in the evening

North
Crooked Course of the River.
Mr. E. Hammer writestothe Evening Light
as follows:
You would do a good service to the public
by writing an article about the following
facts:
1. It is well known that the San Antonio
river from time to time overflows doing much
damage to the neighboring citizens; many
bouses are washed away and four lives have
been lost since 1864.
2. The main causes an- the crooked course of
the river and the obstructions as walls etc.
3. To reduce this danger to a minimum our
city authorities never showed an earnest will
nor the capacity requisite. They neglected
ami neglect to this day their duty by not pre-
venting new obstructions being placed on the
banks and thus endangering public ‘afoty.
Instead of straightening the course as much us
possible they allow each lot to have a different
line and my intention is to lead attention to
that shameful work in operation at the court
house lot.
