TUESDAY SEPTEMBER. 13. 1887.
With the exception of Florida. Texas
has the largest coast line of any of the
American states Iter gulf line reaching
a distance of 1209 miles. Florida her
ders on the gulf for 1144 and on the At-
lantic 303 miles a total of 1007 miles.
Even California with hertmmense Pad-
tic strip has fewer coast miles than Tex
as while her island shores bear no com-
parison to the stretches uh ng the Texas
gulf line. The coast survey reports
that the Atlantic and Pacific coast lines
are very nearly of equal length he Pa-
cific line being 12.734 miles In extent
and the Atlantic 11860 miles. Add to
this the sum of 6843 miles for the Mex-
ico gulf coast and the United States
foots up the very respectable number of
31437 miles of coast line. The commer-
cial advantages that are thus afforded
have as yet been but very imperfectly
realized. On the entire coast line of
Texas running for over 1200 miles
there is not a single harbor or port into
which vessels of ocean draught san
come and receive and d'-charge passen-
gers and freights. It is not to the credit
of this state nor of a country so com-
mercially inclined as is the United
States that such a condition of things
should exist. Had Texas belonged to
some of those “effete eastern govern-
ments’’ of which so much is said on
this side the herring pond she would
have bad massive atone piers reaching
to deep water artilieia! quays and har-
bors and facilities for a commerce com-
mensurate with her natural advant-
ages.
Complications are very likely to arise
between Spain and Central America
owing to the Interference of Melchler
Ordonez Spanish minister resident in
Central America. The open sympathy
for the deposed cabinet which Ordomz
has shown has Issued in a challenge
from Jose Carrera son of the minister
plenipotentiary of Guatemala in Mad-
rid. The course of Ordonezand bis wife
as well have been decidedly revolution-
ary judging from private correspond-
ence and of such a character that the
government of Madrid must nececsarily
take cognizance of the matter. The
Spanish cabinet must either recall Ordo-
neg or sustain him in bis public and
open interference with the political af-
fairs of the country to which he was
sent. Spain is becoming more openly
tolerant and more friendly toward rep-
resentative government at home and
also more considerate of republican in-
stitutions abroad and it is hardly to be
presumed that she will sustain her rep-
resentative in Central America In this
open and flagrant breach of internation-
al comity. The Spanish legation lisa
been made the center of hostility to the
existing government in Central Ameri-
ca and It cannot be expected that Gen.
Bnrillas will pass the matter tn silence.
Tint newly fledged republic of Cou-
naui is a possible bone of contention
between France and Brazil. It is a kind
of no man’s land lying between the con-
fines of French Guiana and the territory
of Brazil. The tract in question con-
tains about 24000 square miles about
the size of West Virginia but has only
a population of 700 souls. They are the
deseedanta of Brazillian slaves and have
no love for that country. Some four
yearn ago they petitioned for annexa-
tion to French Guiana but this France
refused on account of treaty stipulations
with Brazil Tbey then set up political
housekeeping for themselves and form-
ed a republican government all its
transactions being in the French lan-
guage. The country has now declared
Itself independent and is seeking to es-
tablish relations with the outside world.
The exports reach about $35000 annu-
allj and const ts of agricultural pro-
ducts minerals cocoa and timber. The
region is fertile and adapted to the
growth of oranges lemons guava pine-
apples dates cotton coffee tobacco
vanilla rice etc. Brazil is watching
with a very jealous eye the motions of
the French neighbors on the other side
of “no man’s land” and will resent any
attempt of the republic of Counani to
attach Itself to France.
The New York Herald vety recently
ran ugainnt a bard beaded well bedded
snag in Its philanthropic endeavors to
have Governors Island in New York
harbi r converted into a peoples park.
The usual Interview of military officials
and naval authorities was ordered and
the Herald's young men sharpened their
pencils and made the round They found
no encouragement but a decided opin-
ion from such men as Sherman and Por-
ter that the military defences of New
York depended more for their efficiency
upon an inner line of fortifications than
upon fleets and outside ports. That in
view of this Governors Island could not
have its efficiency Impaired as a military-
post by erecting a people’s park there.
Admiral Porter instanced the value of
such inner fortiflcatlons as exemplified
in the abortive seige of Charleston and
asserted that Governors island held
about the same relation to New York as
Fort Sumpter did to Charleston. Com-
ing from such authority the opinions
Will probably have sufficient weight to
holddown the eflervesence of the Her-
ald and lead It to discover some more
eligible spot in which “every green
bough beckons the crowds to come over
to the little garden and frolic over the
soft grass.” Uncle Sam continues to
hold the fort on Governors Island and
Governors island holds New York har-
bor.
Kev Parker now doing duty In this
country as the friend of the great de-
ceased of Plymouth pulpit Is not partic-
ularly happy in hie expressions. He
seems to be too much like Spurgeon a
little too heavy in his intellectual ma-
chinery to run easily. There la a pon-
derosity about him that savors of men-
tal clumsiness.
EDITORIAL BREVITIES.
Gen Powell’s reply to Foraker was
much more remarkable for its omissions
than for its utterances. What he did
not say would make as good a campaign
speech as was ever heard tn Ohio.
There is “bell on wheels” brewing In
Ireland over the treatment of O'Brien In
a felons cell and Balfour may find his

The general impression is that the
beard of investigation In the asylum
cases will give superintendent Dorsett a
clear field and an early chance to retire
by resignation.
Waiting for the verdict is the great
occupation of bar and bench and anarch-
ists in the great slate of suckerdom.
The suckers were taken tn by a false
report yesterday that the verdict of the
lower court had been affirmed.

This city should raise money for the
needed school buildings and do it at
once. The education of children is a
tiling that can not be trilled with.
Where is the spirit that damned the
Blair educational bill and so loudly pro-
claimed the ability eagerness and pain-
ful anxiety of Texas to provide for the
education of her children.

Commander Fairchilds of the G. A.
R. does not desire a second term
though earnestly importuned to accept
the place as a vindication of his “palsy

his private business that he can afford

The G. A. R. fully endorses its retiring
commander.
The days draw nigh In which tbe na-

was touched and a nationalist liberal
was named by the speaker and
excluded from tbe bonse for refusing to
apologize for words used in debate.
The Salisbury government has put Its
foot ioto it in making tbe assertion be-
fore tbe bouse of commons that the
United States had ordered the di-oon-
tinuance of tbe seizures of British seal-

a simpleton but he Is not a knave and
having given no such orders be will
naturally want to know by wbat author-

statement.
Now that cholera has Invaded the pre-
cincts of tbe Vatican at Rome the slug-
gish minds of authority will probably be
quickened to tbe realizingof tbe terrible
scourge which has so fearfully devasted
one section of India and now threatens
to devour all southern Europe. These
coasts must be strictly guarded or Amer-
ica’s turn will come as has always bem
tbe case heretofore.
The civil guards of Brussel* don’t
play second fiddle. Tbeir’s is a great big
first fiddle. They refuse to come to
Chicago because they learn that the
committee on transportation to the
Chicago encampment rates foreign
troops as second-class matter. The
civil guards have no knowledge of
American saw-mills and do not know
that first cut is always a slab.

sometimes been successfully performed the
risks attending it are so great and tbe chances
of recovery so slight that it is seldom resort-
