The West End Lake.
The engineers at West End Town
■lte are making ready their plans for
lake and park. Ground will be broken
Immediately for the lake and excava-
tions made where necessary. Nature
has favored the construction of this
sheet of water to such an extent that
comparatively little work will be needed
to create a beautiful body of water cov-
ering from ten to fifteen acres.
Trie park which is to be an ornament
to these grounds will be something de-
serving the name not a mere enclosure
with nothing to redeem the native bar-
renness. The intention of the syndicate
is to prepare a delightful resort for
those who shall be so fortunate as to
purchase lots or take up a temporary
residence in this section of the city.
Within five days from the date hereof
the West End Town Site company will
commence boring their artesian well
and will not close operations until they
have struck an abundant flow of pure
water. They have the capital the
brains the energy and the taste to make
their addition the pride of Texas.

A Strangle Miss-take.
A certain citizen of San Antonio had
the misfortune to make a serious mis-
take. He spoke to a lady that be
thought was a friend but unfortunately
she was not tbe party and she ran away
crying for assistance. Yesterday a
friend of the lady’s called him to account
and for a time it appeared that a big
tight or probable blood shed was emmi-
nent; but appologies ensued and all was
well. None more regret the unfortunate
occurence than the citzen himself and
he will be mighty careful when speaking
to a lady especially late at nights.

THE LATE FASHIONS
Prepared for the Light by Our Spec-
ial Correspondent.
Brooklyn Sept. 10th 1887.
The fashions for fall and winter sur-
pass In beauty and true elegance any
thing that has been seen for a long time.
As usual there are peculiar and outre
styles for tbe cranks and radicals in
dress for this class of every community
with more money than brains or taste
must be ministered to. Paris wants this
money knows how to get it and New
York designers are just as deft In their
conceit and their management of these
customers. But let not the shopping
novice be deluded by tbe exhibition of
those monstrosities In most first-class
establishments there ate skilled and
conscientious attendants who will help
decide for the buyers who are in doubt
as to the becomingness of a hat
or a garment. Of course it is the bus-
iness of those employed to sell goods
and if a lady insists upon the unsuitable
there is nothing to be said. For especial
toilets In tbis line it seems to me that
the houses of Lord 8. Taylor take the
lead. Here a lady need never feel tn a
hurry nor experience tbe uncomfortable
sensation of being watched and criticised
If she is undecided as to choice. The
majority ot shoppers do not know what
they want and tbe variety and beauty
of the stock Is very apt to bewilder
them. To have just so much money
for a garment and not a cent more and
then have to put up with a Buubby or
Indifferent salesman or saleswoman 1s
a species of torture by no means un-
known to me and from wnich 1 would
be glad to save my friends.
The fall jackets do not differ material-
ly in shape from those of last autumn
though they are somewhat longer in the
back but the materials lor these
garments come In a richness
and variety never before equalled. The
texture of these goods ie so soft and
fine and are so warm and bright look-
ing that they are a real feast to the
eyes. The rough cloths are made
double-breasted with loose nlglegee
fronts and easy fitting backs. T his ma-
terial comes in stripes bars and plaids
but to my thinking the stuff In which
several colors are blended without a set
pattern are the most tasteful and
stylish. These goods come in a thor-
ough melange of shades red gray blue
brown etc. etc. hetero-geneously
mixed. The effect is not at all startling
although there is a dash a chic and at
the same time a suggestion of solid oom-
fort which is very pleasing. These jack-
ets are not expensive. Unless a lady can
make such a garment herself It is much
cheaper to buy it out and out. If they
do not quite fit they can be made to
without extra expense.
Even the Newmarkets aid the Rag-
lans have grown dressy. In previous
years these wraps have been comfort-
able but grave. Now they look as
warm as a lire on the hearth and just
about as cheerful. They are shown in
plaids and strlpeß and some of the gay-
est and really most stylish have gold
threads running through them. Hoods
are again fashionable and lined with
silk of surah to match the material are
a tasteful addition to the garments. Tbe
latest wrinkle ie to have these hoods
useful as well as ornamental so many of
the Newmarkets have them so arranged
that in case of sudden cold or stormthey
can be drawn over tbe hats as a protec-
tion to the ears and the back of the neck.
Of course to accommodate this unique
storm-guard the hat must be
neither high nor elaborately
trimmed. But In these days
when every costume has its cor-
responding head-gear this is not hard
to manage. Apropos of hats there is
no modification in the height and the
new craze of trimming with cocks’ feath-
ers bas a tendency to exaggerate the dis-
tance between the brim and the peak
but these feathers on the hats of young
women are very pretty to wear with a
Raglan or a Newmarket. Let old faces
beware of themfor they give a grotesque
and fly-away appearance wnich should
be caretully guarded against. For such
bonnets of black or dark shadts of vel-
vet trimmed with soft French tips are
most becoming and are found this sea-
son in many new varieties of shape.
Tbe Marlborough hat is entirely new
and designed for young ladies only. It
is shown in all shades of soft felt and
bas a wide brim lined with correspond-
ing shades of velvet and trimmed high
on the left side with cocks’ feathers and
ribbon. 1 said high. I wish to be un-
derstood as very high. This hat will
look well on a tall graceful figure and
an arch plquante face. But not let the
petite nor tbe plain girl venture on a
Marlborough.
Those who have real lace scarfs can
freshen them up and utilize them to ad-
vantage this season. They are to be used
as strings and trimmings to velvet bon-
nets. Jet ornaments and passementerie
will be worn quite as much as last win-
ter on bats and dresses. Faille Fran-
caise will hold its own and black velvet
costumes are more fashionable than
ever.
For the next two months the "Great
Metropolis” will be in its glory. Tbe
shop windows open now are models of
beauty and among all tbe lovely things
there is nothing more beautiful than tbe
new devices in carpets. It almost seems
as if new colors bad been discovered.
Sometime 1 will describe a few of tbe
patterns. Eleanor Kirk.

GRANDMA'S SURPRISE.
BY M. B.
“Grandma where do they get the babies
sweet
With their dimpled hands and tiny feet?”
"Out of the cabbage head my child”
And the needles clicked as grandma smiled.
Grandma left home one beautiful day
An old friend a long-promised visit to pay
But the little brain with a plan was rife.
Asshe captured grandma's carving knife.
Out where the cabbages gleamed in the suu
Tn surprise Grandma 'twould be such fun.
With the knife she cut each head so round
Nor left uncut one in the ground.
When giandtna returned and the ruin spied.
"W’liy did you do it my child?” she cried.
"I wanted to s’prise you. grandma." she re-
plied
"But I guess they've all taken wings and
filed."
May to Bell.
Dear Bell: I'll write you a short letter
To say I'm wonderfully better;
How much that means you ought to know
Who saw me just one month ago—
Thin nervous fretful white as chalk.
Almost too weak to breathe or talk;
Head throbbing as if fit for breaking
A weary ever-present aching.
But now life seems a different thing;
I feel as glad as bird on wing!
1 say. and fear no contradiction
That Pierce’s Favorite Prescription
Is grand! Why I’d have died without It!
Ma thinks there’s no mistake about it.
It’s driven nil my ills away:
Just come and see! Yours ever May.
Capt. Harris of tbe army who has
