SATURDAY OCTOBER. I. 1887.
Thbrk seeing to be an awful burry on
tbe part of the party of the first part to
have some one hurry up that Injunction
suit. If tbe wishes of the citizens bad
been consulted there would have been
no need of such an Injunction. Popular
feeling should have enjoined it in tbe
beginning. The Light has some predic-
tions on tile concerning this thing which
may be cited hereafter. The injunction
may not suit when it does come. It will
be further occasion of delay and this ap-
pears to be tbe very thing desired and
contrived for by certain parties with
muniolgal axes to grind.
The Presbyterian journal of Phila-
delphia in running amuk at tbe Cen-
tennial because the chief dlgnatary of
the Catholic church in America was in-
vited to conduct its devotional cere
mony a simple prayer has shown more
bigotry to the square inch than was ex-
pected of a square yard of puritanlsm a
century since. Argument concerning
the case is wasted. Braying a fool in a
mortar with a pestle does not cause his
folly to depart from him and the P. J.
editor can be left alone to chew the cud
of his own bitter fancies. It is only
necessary to remember in condemning
this man that the Presbyterian church
is in no way responsible for bis phobia.
The morning dispatches give no addi-
tional information concerning Thurs-
day’s election in Tennessee. Latest re-
ports received in yesterday’s afternoon
dispatches affirm tbe defeat of prohibi-
tion by 20000. Should this favorable
news prove true it will have a very
healthy effect on the after agitations of
this question. License laws with good
police regulations both strictly enforc-
ed will do all that can be done to reg-
ulate the traffic. Suppression has been
found impracticable as well as imperill-
ing to all ideas of minority rights.
The real remedy for all the evils of In-
temperance will be found in a wise sys-
tem of education. It is a question for
tbe home the school tbe church tbe
public press. The law and the necessi-
ty of self government must be more di-
rectly taught and individual responsi-
bility inculcated every where.
The Galveston News people who have
been very persistent in demanding the
rigid enforcement of the Sunday law
have been arrested for "compelling their
employes to labor on Sunday.” This
act is a direct infringement of the ex-
press terms of the Sunday law and has
no doubt been violated by the News
company every time it has issued a Sun-
day paper. The News people tight the
constitutionality of the law in its appli-
cation to Sunday newspapers under
that clause of the constitution which
says : “No law shall ever be
passed curtailing tbe liberty of speech
or of the press.” The outcome of this
suit will be awaited with interest.
The Waco Day pleads for a mean in
Sunday observances and says: “A fair
compromise between extremes will be
tbe best basis for laws in that direction.”
Can the Day designate what will be ac-
cepted as a fair compromise; or show
why in a "free government where the
church is divorced from tbe state” any
religious considerations or cburchly re-
strictions should obtain in a mere mat-
ter of law beyond protecting churches
in their rights of worship without
molestation ?
The anti-contract law preventing the
"importation and migration of foreign-
ers and aliens under contract or agree-
ment to perform labor in the United
States” is likely to Interfere with the
settlement of a rector over the church of
Holy Trinity of New York. The rule Is
cited and complaint made by certain
Scotchmen and the case will be tested In
the courts.
Forbest fires in Canada are so preva-
lent that navigation on tbe St. Lawrenoe
river is seriously Interfered with by tbe
smoke which hangs like a thick pall
over tbe river between Montreal and
Quebec. In the vicinity of the Domin-
ion capital Ottawa the fires threaten
the very existence of the city. These
fires range from Quebec to Pembroke a
distance of nearly 400 miles and must
be terribly destructive. The safety of
the city of Ottawa depends upon tbe
direction the winds take.
EDITORIAL BREVITIES.
Cleveland's admirers call him "Bus-
iness from Base” and Maria Halpin says
be has been In very base business.
The Cleveland family are shooting
through Pennsylvania and Ohio to a big
recepiion in Chicago. They would
have gone through Ohio In a pneumatic
tube bad it been possible.
The ball tossers in Galveston have a
sure thing In the courts. No jury has
yet been found to convict them for
playing the diamond game on Sunday.
There Is hope for the News.
Jacob Sharpe has secured his stay of
proceedings and will not conduct bls
tight before tbe court of appeals from
Sing Sing ss a base of operations. Jake
was made an exception to all precedents
In being arraigned at all.
Bckke is quite lionized in his quarters
at Galveston and seems to enjoy the
situation. He expects and will proba-
bly receive a light punishment. He will
not accept bail he says and does not
want it. He has apparently had enough
of the bonds business.
The promises made in March are vio-
lated the rest of the year. The city
mogul has Issued his ukase. No gar-
bage furnaces can be even experimented
with at the makers expense without
cost to the city until tlie next batch of
city bonds Is sold.

OPENING OF THE GRAND.
A Large Audience Appreciative of
Miss Louise Balfe’s "Dagmar.”
The Grand Opera House was opened
last night for tbe season of 1887-8 by the
talented young emotional actress. Miss
Louise Balfe In the role of "Dagmar”
which Itself is one of the finest and
strongest of emotional plays in the re-
pertoire of any actress. The house was
well filled by Miss Balfe’s old friends
and others who came to cast their hom-
age before her. In Dagmar Miss Balfe
shone resplendent throughout the play.
She has lost none of that sublime pathos
and Intense feeling she so well knows
how to throw into her actingand indeed
from the fervor of her acting the im-
pression is made upon the audience that
the impersonation is real and that the
genuine heroine is before them and the
play a reality. None but Miss Balfe
could essay this role and tbe role could
have been created for none but Miss
Balfe.
Dagmar portrays the young wife mar-
ried to an uncongenial spouse whose
love she at first thought was hers but had
been estranged through his passion for
gambling. An evil friend conceiving a
strong passion tor his beautiful wife
ruins him and then kills him and the
odium of tbe murder falls upon bis faith-
ful desperate wife. In tbe trial she
escapes the penalty but with the
shadow of the crime resting upon her
retires to a quiet life. Her only friend
throughout tbe trial Is tbe colonel who
previous to her marriage loved her from
afar and still loves herthough from the
first there is a doubt in bls mind as in
others that she really did not kill her
husband Martell. The play hinges upon
her refusal to open her lips and furnish
a clue to the murderer and establish
her innocence which secret she re-
fuses to disclose to the last.
a« the letter found in her hus-
husband’s hand and destroyed by her
oasts a reflection upon her good name.
She discovers she loves the colonel and
finally when the villian Percival
through all bis machinations is finally
defeated and exposed through a grand
piece of womanly strategy on her part
she proves her innocence to the colonel
and the world and all ends happily.
in each act there are several especial-
ly line climaxes. In the first the wife
Miss Balfe was grand when repulsing
the proffered love of Percival. In the
second when telling her busband of tin
insulting love of Percival she rises
grandly In portraying the true wife
when she speaks."! will be beard even
though you will kill me.” Mr. Frank
Roberts as Colonel Stanley Is fine when
he speaks "tell me your secret or 1
must see you no more” and tbe pause
she makes at this question ere sending
him away caused the audience to
await her answer breathlessly and dis-
appointment was evidenced when she
refused Tbe entire playing of Miss
Balfe however In the first part was
eclipsed even by tbe grand portrayal in
the last scene when to prove her inno-
cence she blinds the villain by her su-
preme ensemble of the love for him she
does not feel and this scene was of
such a realistic kind that her audi-
ence was made to shudder at the terri-
ble power of of a woman transformed
into a beautiful siren.
Miss Balfe’s support was not equal to
her. but Mr. Frank Roberts and Mr.
Frank Ambrose as the Colonel and as
Percival were well up in their roles
Mr. Frank Latimer In the dual part of
Martell and Lord Castleton was labor-
ing under tbe disadvantage of being ill.
His parts in "A Planter’s Wife” at the
tbe matinee and tonight performance
is essayed by a gentleman from New
York who arrived In the nick of time.

gramme used at tbe Grand Opera House

ing the season is printed by the Light

The small sprinkling of politics that
crops out occasionally In the Grand

Removing a Serious Obstruction

Dynamite am) giant powder might answer
admirably to remove obstructions from Hell

None tint tin* purblind adherents of antiquated
theories in medicine advise or sanction such a
