FRIDAY. OCTOBER. 14. 1887.
Gkorgk Francis Train baa broken
loose after twenty years suppression
and is getting dangerous. His barran
gucs inflame the socialists and the
mayor of Chicago has ordered him
locked up in case be attempts to speak
again and will also order an inquest to
determine the question of bis sanity.
George is used to that sort of thing.
He is as looney as Gltteau.
The croakers who claim that there are
no more manly boys in America are
giving themselves away. There is more
true manhood in America today than
ever before since America was. The
trouble is with these grumblers who
live with their heads buried in the
past they do not recognize tbe merit
behind the changed externals of yester-
day. They look for the old manliness
in tbe old clothes and cannot discern
its essential features in tbe new gar-
ments. Society misses it in taking these
fellows for dete lives. It is not the
fault of tbe world that these wouid-be
critics are blind.
On tbe eve of the Mitohelstown ver-
dict tbe police who were implicated
were moved from the vicinity* and tbe
coroner charged the police inspector
with illegal Improper and unconstitu-
tional conduct in removing them. I lie
Inspector. Bronwrigg sergeants Ker-
nan Ryder and Brendan and constables
Garen and Deran were found guilty of
murder and their arrest ordered. This
righteous act may tend to restrain the
wanton and deliberate murder of inno-
cent Irishmen by the government con-
stabulary and give some security to op-
pressed Irishmen whose lives are
threatened by tbe persecutions of the
coercion act. If the conviction in a
criminal court of justice follows ibis
conviction In the court o! in-
quest tbeeffect will be satisfactory.
Concerning tbe dead weight of cattle
business in tbe southwest during tiie
present season and tbe prospect of bet-
ter times the Texas stockman and
Farmer of this city speaks somewhat
encouragingly as follows—“ There is
more interest north and east in western
stock raising than at any time since the
bottom fell oat of tbe boom. 'The reao
tlon from the collapse may be a trifle
mild but the indications are that it will
be along presently. ’ How far ofl pres-
ently is it would be difficulty to particu-
larize. A stockman from 100 miles west
of this section in conversation with the
Light yesterday said he saw no reason
to conclude that there would be much
change until next fall at the very ear-
liest. The general impression is that
next fall is tbe maximum time limit and
not the minimum.
Instead of speculating as to the ef-
fect of the telegraphic absorption of the
B. &O. lines by the Western Union it
were wiser to consider tbe best plan of
preventing such absorption by con-
gressional action. The dissemination
of general intelligence is too vital a
matter to be placed under embargo by
the greed of any corporation. There are
things that can be done and some other
things there are that cannot be done at
least with Impunity. Among these Is
the eflort to check tbe spread of knowl-
edge by laying a tax upon the channels
of communication. It was only a few
years since tbe government of this
country so Improved and amended its
postal laws as to facilitate and cheapen
tbe cost of letter transportation beyond
all intelligent conoeption of a letter
rate. By tbe competitions of tbe B. *
O. telegraph company the grasping
grinding tarlfl of the Western Union
Telegraph Company was cut down
materially. This movement absorbing
tbe B. & O. lines is a movement against
farther cheapening the rates of tele-
graph service if it be not a movement in
favor of advanced rates. The efforts of
tbe government to cheapen postage on
letters is to he antagonized by this
movement to prevent the oheapenlng of
telegraph messages. A letter is a tele
graphic vummunicatlon and a telegram
Is abetter for all practical purposes. It
is utterly inconsistent for congress to
provide cheap postal communication and
then permit private or corporate greed
to continue the old time rate upon tele-
graph messages. Tbe spirit and genius
of tbe two are so antagonistic that the
time must come and that before long
when tbe government will undertake to
supply the people of this country with a
telegraph service at cost as it now sup-
plies mall service at cost.
EDITORIAL BREVITIES.
The great question now agitating the
Island City and the Bayou City is this:
Does Houston own herself or Is she a
dependency of tbe Galveston wharf
company?
Early frosts are predicted. Powell’s
Ohio ballot crop Is reported as already
suffering to an alarming extent. Zero
weather is promised by Old Probs in that
latitude early in November.
Kansas City was true to her instincts
and gave Grover a very noisy reception.
The feature of tbe occasion was tbe lay-
ing of the corner stone of a Y. M. C. A.
building.
What alls the Times and the Y. M. C.

volunteer forces of the Salvation Army.

cal hurdle race this fall. There are no
less than eight different starters for tbe
winning post and If tbe eleotlons do

dles there la little virtue in ihe signs of
the moon.
The Ohio democrats are trying to

In loading up with war correspond-
ents the European nations are not mak-
ing preparations for actical war. These
wars are on paper and correspondents a
necessity. When the order comes—cor-
respondents to tbe rear I look out for
real business. So long as tbe order is —
correspondents to tbe front! Europe is

The California craze shows healthy
signs of collapse. There may be a few
dollars left for mechanics and building
may continue a few months longer but
it will only be that those who have
overloaded may get a chance to unload
without sacrificing tbe whole cargo. Go
slow on California.
The Light some time since expressed
the very strongest opinion tbat tbe joint
court bouse and city bail would never
be built. This prophecy was made on
the very self-evident supposition tbat
two cannot become one. unless the two
are agreed. Tbe prophecy shows no
signs of failing.
Lilly Langtry showed her American
blood by backing the Volunteer in the
late race and winning $5OO as the re-
sult. Lilly may find some trouble in
taking out naturalization papers but
she shows her Americanism of feeling
very plainly and despite all reports to
the contrary seems tojbe growing in fa-
vor with tbe best classes of American
citizens.
The democratic journals do not place
Implicit reliance npon tbe idea of fumi-
gation as an epidemic preventive. Ut
course not. The republican party fumi-
gated the reminiscence for twenty odd
years and the epidemic of its retrograde
ideas threatens this country as serious-
ly as ever. Fumigation is useless. Tbe
true way is to quarantine against
democracy.
Good feeding will pay even In Texas.
The ranchmen who care for their sheep
and cattle find increased weight in-
creased wool Increased number of
strong iambs and calves and more profit
ev.ri way. Northern stockmen sell sur-
plus stock to buy feed for remainder if
feed or cash Is short and find it profita-
ble. To a certain extent this also would
bold good in Texas.
The Texas cattlemen are absolutely
convinced tbat killing their cattle in
Texas and shipping it as dressed meat is
their only salvation from the beef sharks
of the northwest but they want some
other parties to build the refrigerators
and stand sponsor for their success.
With a very few exceptions the cattle-
men do not take hold strongly of pro-
posed refrigeration matters.
The male critics of tbe girl's girdle as
an article of feminine attire seem to re-
gard it as a personal grievance. To

Imagine tbat the grldle bad usurped one
of tbeir own time honored privileges.
The young ladies of this generation are
wise in relying upon the shop made
girdle; otherwise they would not be so
wise.
The weather at this season of the
year shows a very decided change from
corresponding period of years before
last and last year. There is a marked
coolness in San Antonio circles which is
having its effeot in the early winter
trade. As yet it has not spread beyond
the domain of trade or entered the pre-
cincts of social life. It Is probably only
a reaction from tbe heated term which
culminated August 4th.
Pope Leo’s jubilee gifts are as varied
as tbe gifts at a Methodist parsonage
on donation night. Tbe collection con-
tains among other things a mighty (uot
mitey) cheese a barrel of wine four
yards of home spun linen (a servant
girls gift) two tiger skins and anover-
grown sausage. The reporter who saw
the sage when be saw the sausage saw
a sage who marvelled greatly at his
sausage.
The Utica Herald mentions the names
of two celestials who recently departed
that city for China. Jo Sing and Ah
Hum and calls them “respected mem-
bers of our celestial community.” The
Herald has It bad. Tbe only respected
member of the celestial community of
San Antonio is Go-Hang and be would
be much more celestial if he would fol-
low the advice of bis name and—go

Congress will peg away next winter
on a new general extradition law gov-
erning the surrender of criminals with-
in the states. Great Britain wants the
international extradition treaty extend-
ed. This all points to tbe good time
coming when the operations of law will
have no territorial limit and only purely
political offences will be non-extradlta-
ble.
‘‘The wild-eyed republican editors
who berate Cleveland tor not visiting
Lincoln's grave” are not many despite
tbe assertion of tbe “half acre” organ.
Republicans honor and revere Lincoln
and are in no wise anxious to see hypo-
critical tears shed over bis grave.
Cleveland’s visit could add no distinc-
tion to confer no honor upon tbe ashes
of tbat illustrious dead whose memory
is the nations priceless legacy.
