REMEDY FOR ANARCHISM
The one remedy for the spread ot
anarchic principles in this country that
will be effectual at least effectual above
all others is restricted immigration.
This not so much because it will keep
out the anarchist leaders or even those
of pronounced anarchic tendencies as
such but because it will diminish and
finally prevent to a very great extent
the landing ot those people upon these
shores who are Ilie raw material out of
which anarchists are made. Stop
the impotaatlon of the raw ma-
terial and the manufacture of an-
archists would eoon die out in America
for want of raw product upon which to
worK.
The anarchist is not an American he I
has not in him the tendencies of .
American civilization. The same Is
true of all English speaking people. I
Thia fact is demonstrated in the recent
Chicago tragedy. Of ail the men in-
volved in that conspiracy but one was
an American. Of toe five thousand
who followed in the funeral train of the i
dead anarchists not an American face
was scan. The imprint of European
speech and a European birthright was
upon them all. How came they to •
America? Thousands and tens ot :
thousands of just such asthev.have t'.i:
imported to America to take the plac.
of American workingmen on tho rail- ■
ways in the mines in tiie rolling mills
in the foundries and as laborers in ; il
the cities of thi’ vast union. 1 mpnr; d

the result; their natural enmity toward (
government burning in tin r bn aste; '
themselves regarded by tmeriimi labor-
ers as the greatest enemy to American
labor; is it any wonder that they give a
ready ear to the harangues ot their an-
archist countrymen whose trade is de- I
struction and who only live upon the
agitations and disturbances of society j
The prevention of this immigration by
heroic process is the remedy. That pro-
cess is a rigid restrictive immigration
law. The safety of the state the tran
quility of our cities tho interests of our
workingmen demand the enforcement of
measures of this character. This truth
may not be accepted today it will be

Im the matinee yesterday afternoon
held at the council chamber the usual
confab was indulged in between his
honor the mayor and Aiderman Galla-
gher. Unlike some of these Interlocu-
tories this one was conducted with ex-
cessive courtesy on both sides and hie
honor condescended to come down to
figures and explain just why it was that
the bid for bonds was refused. It now
seems that no attempt will be made to
dispose of the city bonds until after tbe
settlement of the injunction suit. This
relegates the matter so far into the dim
and distant shades of the great future
that the average mind will not attempt
to pieroe the impenetralia of court-
house and city hail erection but will
fall back upon tbe pavilion the United
States customs bouse and the next cen-

OFFICIAL FOOD TESTS.
The Ohio State Food Commission
Tost the Baking Powders. An-
alysis of the Chief Brands Sold
in the Southwest. Their
Strength and Value Offi-
cially Ascertained. A
Large Number
Impure.
Tbe Ohio State Dairy and Food Com-
missioner Geri. S. 11. Hurst has made
! public (Circular No. 6) the results of the
Commission’s investigation of baking
powder. This Commission was formed
by tbe Legislature with Instruction to
make an examination of the food supply
of tfie State and to give a report of such
examination to the public I’he exam-
i ination ot tile bakingpowders was made
i by Professor 11. A. Weber State Chem-
I Ist and. relating as It does to an article
I of daily u e in the food of almost every
one Is of particular interest.
The rattier starlling fact is brought
; out by the report that of the thirty dit-
ter<nt brands of baking powder anal-
I yzed. composing about all those sold in
the state twenty of them are made from
alum arubtiiirr dedand by the high-
est medical authoriti’s to be injurious io
health when used in food
The commissioner classifies tbe baking
powders into three general divisions
according to iL« :r value:
Ist. Cream of Tartar Baking Pow-
ders.
2nd. Phosphate Baking Powders.
3rd Alum Baking Powders.
Tbe object .of baking powders is
'.inn mixed in the flour und subjected
to moisture t generate a leavening gas
in the dough which will raise the bread
and cause it to bo porous and light.
Hie commissioner explains that the
best baking powder is that which the
ingredients being healthful gives otl the
largest amount of leavening gas and
leaves the smallest amount of resiuuum
in the bread. A small amount of carbo-
nate of ammonia which is considered
healthful 1s used in some of the cream of
tartar powders to give them a higher
strength. The commission say that
pure alum is undoubtedly a hurtful salt
and that the resultant salts tiom its
combination with soda as formed in the
can scarcely be less hurtful.
L 5 report ranks the powders and
si 2 $ the amount in each of inert rc-
which is using it would appear
as residuum in the bread as follows:

ihe large amount of inert matter or

alum powders will he not' d. This in Hie
phosphate powders is largely of lime; in
the alum p. wd. n it is chiefly alum. It
will be gratifying to the public tool)

use. tiie Uojal is also tbe purest hi

by a corresponding figure.
The carbonic or leavening gas pro-
tin ed by tiie powders indicates their
strength; and their true val .e mav be
ascertained by considering the amour:
