Thb message points nut the true way
of American competition with English
manufacturers that is to reduce Ameri-
can labor to the English and European
standard.
Tub presidential courage in the mes-
sage Is very apily likened to the courage
of the pawing bull Just before the loco
motive hoists ulm over the divide and
Converts him into a sitting bu 1.
Mr Cleveland s message has con-
clusively shown that it is the duty of
the voters of this country to remove the
democratic party from power. For this
service the republicans of the country
owe him thanks.
Sir John Lubbock says that the ne-
groes never kissed until they were
taught by the white people. Good rea-
son why. The negro is not a natural
mathematician arid the science of
planetary motion Is not native to him
All kisses are ellptloal in form and the
negro In his savage condition does not
understand the figure For a case ot
late development be has made good pro
gress.
Each democratic locality seems to
have its own local objections to the
president’s tariff reduction recommen-
dations. The New Orleans Times-Dem-
o ’rat protests against the presidential
idea of maintaining the tax on tobacco
and evidently favors in part If not In
whole Mr. Blaine’s idea the abolishing
Of the tax The tax falls heavily upon
the agricultural producer and in that
fact alone is seen the necessity of abol-
ishing It wholly or in great measure.
The agricultural products of America
should be free from tax to home con-
sumers.
Missouri and Texas both great wool
growing states have something at stake
in the carrying out of the presidential
policy for the destruction of the sheep
and wool industries of this country. The
wool growers have adjourned to meet
again io Washington on the 7th of Jan-
uary. Texas wool growers should see
to it that on that occasion they are fully
represented It the destructive policy
of this democratic administration 1s to
be carried out Texas sheep men owe it
to themselves to see that it is not con-
summated by their votes. The work of
salvation cannot be successfully en-
trusted to the ministers of destruction.
Thb democratic statistician Js busy
figuring out Just how many moons it
has been since Don Dickinson said very
publicly and very pointedly: "I will
never vote or act with the democratic
party again as an organization.”
Was it before or after he remarked
concerning Greeley’s election? “The
democratic party passively or actively
as its members may please to say de-
feated Greeley; and by defeating him
broke any link which might have bound
the progressive men of the old party to
it.” Don must feel good when he sits
down to peruse hie old arraignment of
the party from whom be now takes pap.
Thb more Lamar's antecedents are en-
quired Into the more necessary does it
appear that the presidential nomination
to the supreme bench should be rejected.
Concerning this unfitting appointment
the New York Tribune says: ’'Mr. La-
mar’s rank at the bar would never have
made him a supreme court judge. This
is the testimony of many who are fami-
liar with bls professional career and
who declare that bis actual legal experi-
ence bas been inconsiderable. Mr La-
mar's still rebellious sentiments as ex-
emplified by his angry denunciation only
two years ago of those who dared to call
Jefierson Davie "a traitor’' do pot point (
to lilm as a man to be Intrusted w HL It e
decision of matters growing out of the
late war and bis responsibility for Mis-
sissippi repudiation is uot reassuring ns
to the stand lie might take upon similar
questions. It remains to be seen
whether personal and social Influence
and senatorial good-fellowship will
make his way to confirmation easy.”
There are more democrats In the stale
of Texas who would vote for James G.
Blaine if nominated as the republican
candidate for the chief magistracy of
this nation than would vote ’for any
other republican who could be named.
There nre some people who are afraid
of all that they cannot see measure
fathom and understand. These people
are the only republloons who are afraid
of James G. Blaine. He la a man of
such large views such comprehensive
grasp of public allalrs. such unlimited
conception of the pos-lbllltlea of ids
country such all round Ideas of Am'-ri-
can destiny and dignity that the pes I-
mistlc souls of mugw umps utterly fall
tograsp the magnificent proportions ot
the man. Then there is another class
the envious souls whoa ' little gizzards
are shrivelled with this hissing coal
from hell until they have no room In
their natures for an acknowledgment of
his real greatness. As Bismark says.
“America has but one statesman. James
G. Blaine.”

and other technicalities of the law? Do
these things bring any "disgrace upon
the administration?” Did the sup-
pression of “ free speech ” by
the immortal twentieth bring
any disgrace on the State of Texas?
Outside w orld. please be candid for we
really wish to know bow you regard
us.
Now. Mr. Attorney General the “per-
tinent question” is this. Wnat has be-
come ot the law passed by the Will leg-
islature requiring all railroads in the
state of Texas to keep and maintain
their general offices within the limits of
the state and upon failure so lodo lix-
mg the penalty at $lOOO fine for each
and every day the law was d sob> yed ?
l'he charters granted to the several
Railway Companies the right Io build
roads require that ■ the general office”
of the company shall be at such and
such a place named therein Yet the
general office of nearly every mile of
road In the state is either nt St Louis
or New Orleans. The people ot T exas
gave away millions of acres of land to
encourage and foster these same roads
and one of the restrictions placed upon
the benlticiaries of this ri< h subsidy
was. that they should keep their general
offices In the state but every one knows
the “law” is a “dead letter.” and that
the attorney general has not time to en-
force it because he Is kept so busy “go-
ing over to San Antonio (at the state's
expense) to keep the “Duich from drink-
ing beer on Sunday.” Keep quietbroth-
er “attorney general of the state” or
the people may think there is "some-
thing dead up the creek.” The people
ot San Antonio wont bother any
one else we are all happy
and contented Some ot us gotoebureb
and some of us drink beer on Sundays
and yet some of us do both. The latter
however are in a hopeless minority
and should any of us indulge in beer
we eat “Sauer kraut” or "Hmberger” to
kill the smell before going to church.
Please let us hear from you Mr. Attor-
ney General with a “quo warranto”
about the railroad law and we will send
you either a keg of our best beer or a
dead servant girl which ever )you pre-
fer by return mall Yours truly.
