which in previous years could not be
shown to advantage in Turner hall was
seen in all Ils splendor last night and
was a feature of the play. Mr. O'Neill’s
support was also excellent and be and

AN OBSERVER'S NOTES.
San Antonio Dec. 14.
Dally Light:
In my communication of tbe Sth re-
ferring to manufacture*. I would ask the
question: Why did tbe Southern Baking
Powder factory cease operation? It had
taken Ite hold on the trade quite gener-
ally on ll* merits 1 presume or perhaps
it was of It* lower price In comparison
with other good* In that line. The par-
tie* who bad taken hold of it were busi-
ness men and they ought to have
kn wn They built a commodious ware-
house for tbeir material and goods and
all at once dropped out of existence.
T hey bad In tbeir employ a number of
girls and perhaps boys who I re-
marked in my previous note deserved
consideration.
There is a mattrass factory here but
It seems that they are only working the
local or cltv trade. Tbe moes mattrass
said to be’tne best sanitary mattrass
made put In operation by a very worthy
man. employing but few bands tbe
trade can be carried outside of the city
to a large business with pushand tact;
perhaps the need of capital is the cause.
Now let some men come forward and
get posted as to Its probabilities give
the needed aid making employment fur
both girls and boys. It won’t do to turn
up our nose at little things that would
become big things if properly nursed
and cared tor.
I would like for you to get the Decem-
ber number ot the North American Re-
view and read "An Election Day in
New York” and tell me that is not the
same programme enacted here in our
elections.
If it does not suggest anarchism then
I must confess I don’t know tbe mean-
ing of the word. An Observer.

Hotel Thief at Work.
A bold theft occurred this morning
about eight o’clock at tbe hotel Mav-
erick the stage carpenter for the Monte
Cristo company 8. J. Enscoe being
ihe victim. Enscoe was in room 114
and was awakened by some one enter-
ing his room With his eyes yet closed
for be was in bed he addressed the per-
son thinking him tbe bell boy. Re-
ceiving no answer be opened bis eyes
only to see a man leaving bis room hur-
riedly and he also saw that bis clothing
was disarranged and scattered about.
A second later tbe bell boy came up and
Mr. Enecoe pointed tbe retreating man
out to tbe bell boy who followed him
and told tbe clerk Mr Wash. The fel-
low was making leisurely away and
when Mr. Wash followed him and
stopped him he drew a knife and
showed fight. He was allowed to pass
on and was followed by Mr. Wash and
another young man. hoping they would
find a policeman. Tbe fellow ran down
Avenue D and was lost sight of proba-
bly biding among tbe lumber of the plan-
ing mill yard on the corner. The police
were notified and have been keeping a
look-out for him.
The robber secured $3O and a watch
from Mr. Enscoe.

Work Stopped.
The West Commerce street Improve-
ments are stopped. Capt Braden the
contractor refusing to go ahead with
the work while the street car injunction
suit against tbe city remains iu force.
The wheels of tbe city government are
also clogged Mrs. Ostrom's Injunc-
tion suit against tbe city requiring the
presence of a good many of the city offi-
cials in the district court today.
Burglars at Work.
Last night an attempt was made to
burglarize Heubaum’s store on East
Commerce street. The burglars gained
an entrance to the premises by prying
with a cedar post tbe iron bar front-
ing tbe rear window and forcing the
window open. They then forced open tbe
cash drawer containing between four or
five dollars In small change. After-
wards they made an attempt to bore In
tbe safe to explode it and although two
holes were bored in the safe door they
failed to eflect an entrance. The sup-
position is that tbe men were novices
in tbe business or were scared ofl before
they bad finished. The burglars left tbeir
tools behind them. These it is found
were stolen from Lange’s blacksmith
shop on the same street which had also
been burglarized doubtless by tbe same
gang.

YOU SIR » NEXT t
Isn't there something very suggestive in
this salutation of the barber? There stands
Old Father Time for instance with bis
scythe. What of his harvest? Do what we
will we can’t avoid the inevitable. Life may
be saved prolonged made bappy by physi-
cal comfort be blessed by spiritual guidance
be honored by good works but it has its
limit ordained by fate. The Old Reaper may
he forgiving he may be lenient and partial
to many; notwithstanding all the sweep of
the scythe goes on—ranks are mowed
down you are reached at last. He
calls “Next” and passes on to ranks
of other victims. How near he is we never
know. We may know that lie's about that’s
all by many signals. Even a minor ache or
pain may be the forerunner of his swift ap-
proach or chronic agony of his slow but cer-
tain coming. Neglect of either only wel-
comes his advance; precaution and care
ward off attack. What then is the moral?
Simply topreserve "' *
health to provide
against sudden da-
rangementa of the
System fremwhich
arise sudden and acute pains which bykeej>
ing the proper remedy at hand for use are
cured at once and permanently. But to get
back tothe barber. Mr. Willed F. Cook pub-
lisher of the Courier Canajoharie N. Y.
titiiler date of February 10 1887 relates the
following incident: "Thos. Beekman a
prominent colored barber of this village
suffered several months with rheumatism:
he was unable to stand up part of the time and
attended to his customers with difficulty.
Having been myself greatly reliever! by the
great remedy for pain 1 advised him to try
It. He was rubbed three or four times be-
foredinner. When he left his shop he was
as spry as ever in his life. He says he
danced'ajig. St. Jacobs Oil cured hint as it
cured me and he is the happiest man in the
town.” If three applications will cure a
chronic case of rheumatism and induce a man
to dance a jig which are facts the Old
