Tbe Stockman and Farmer in report-
ing tbe horse market in this city this
week says tbe following say and scores
a good point for tbe Union stock Yards
project:
'Thereare somethings done about tbe
stock yards in San Antonio that we do
not like and to sell stock for one sum
and make bill of sale for another is one
of them. And. by-the-by tbe fellows
wbo kick at the way we report this stock
market are the very ones who do these
things. One of them was office tbe
other day complaining that we did not
in every case knock the black out in our
reports and when told that we report
sales from the stubs of the bills of sale
books said that does not help the mat-
ter and gave in evidence that just then
be had a bill of sale for $51)0 when tbe
sale actually occurred at $350. Wasn't
be a nice man to be criticizing our mar-
ket reports. While we should batoto
see our dealers suffer loss from Union
Stock Yards or any other cause we de-
sire to say here and now tbat unless
they effect some sort of organization to
prevent some things tbat are done here
Union Stock Yards will become a neces-
sity. There is too much stock bandied
here'or tbe present slip-shod style of
dob.g It to prevail much longer. There
Yse things done by honest men and con-
sidered legitimate that would not be
derated in well regulated Union Stock
l'ards. And still we bear tbe complaint
hat so much stock Is being handled at
the country shipping stations.”

a receiver as a common carrier. His
rights and liberties are those of
a carrier. He is bound to af-
ford to all railway companies
whose lines connect with bls equal
facilities for exchange of traffic it is
his duty to receive from and deliver to
connecting roads both loaded and empty
cars. He cannot discriminate agaii.st
one road by maintaining a policy of r n-
intercourse. More need not bo saiu on
this question as the receiver
has wisely rescinded his In*
structione which discriminated against
the petitioner wbo has no pur-
pose or desire to deny to the petitioner
any of Its local rights although tbe
petitioner has accomplished his chief
purpose In Invoking tbe aid of tbeoour s
It is urged by his council tbat person
belonging to the Brotherhood of Loco-
motive engineers and especially Arthur
who Is chief officer of tbat organization
has interfered with tbe receiver and bls
subordinates in tbe management of the
Wabash property and tbat tbev should
be punished for their illegal and cont’ -
maolous conduct. The receiver and
his council make no such com-
plaint. On the contrary the receiver
declares that there baa been no Infer-
ence with him while tbe affidavits sub-
mitted in support of tbe petitions show
tbat Mr. Arthur sent telegraph
messages to the engineers of tbe
Union Pacific railway directing
them to haul no cars of petitioner
it does not fairly appear from evidence
that engineers in service of receiver
ever received such order by telegraph
or otherwise. For the present it Is suf-
ficknt to say tbat the court will protect
the property of Wabash in itn custody.
Employees of the receiver can not be
obliged to remain tn bis service against
their wish but neither they or
others will be permitted to ’nterfere
with a disbursing receiver or his sub-
ordinates in possession and operation of
property In his custody. The lawless in-
terference with the receiver and his
employees in tne discharge of
their duties will not be tolerated.
It is proper to state however
injustice to the Wabash engineers that
they do not desire to maintain an atti-
tude of defiance to law and are now will-
ing to aid tbe receiver in the lawful and
successful administration of bis trust.

Nkw York March 14 — Tbe sun Is
shining brightly this morning and tbe
weather is moderating. Travel on tbe
elevated roads Is fully resumed but the
surface roads are still Impassable Tbere
Is no improvement In the condition of
the telegraph wires. Tbe meagre reports
received shew that people living in tbe

periences. A number of persons it la
reported perished from cold and ex-

employees of the Singer Sewing Ma-

eral of them were badly frozen; one man
named Ellis was picked out of the enow

cordance with this discussion Von

an especially strong position against the

The wale in use in anjk thermometer is
more or less arbitrary. It A .■■■■cessary to fix
two definite temperaturea and Vunign their
positions ou a wale. Water of
the most common bodies in nature is usually
employed and freezing ami boiling |K>idtw
are taken as definite points especially as the
temperature of freezing water or of melting
ice is almost alMoiutely fixed—pressure alter-
ing it only very slightly. The thermometer
generally used in the United States and
Great Britain is of the Fahrenheit scale
which places the freezing point too great by

zero as does also the French measurement
which is known as the centigrade scale and
is used almost exclusively by scientific men

The republican club movement con-
tinues to grow in strength and populari-

lines. The facte developed at the meeting

cheering facts and deserve very atten-
tive consideration.
In another column we publish a com-
munication favoring Col. Warner for the

Esq. has made a distinct mark as a good
judge and in our opinion it would be a
mistake not to continue hia excellent
services on tbe bench.

doctors who don't always guess right. You
need not guess what ails you when your food
don't digest when your bowels and stomach
