DOM PEDRO 11.
Enperob op Brazil Now Seriously 111.
News of the serions Illness of Dom
Pedro 11 emperor of Brazil is received
with sincere regret in this country. His
majesty has travelled extensively in the
United States and has impressed fav-
orably all with whom he has made
acquaintance by his unaffected manly
bearing bis stability bis eager and
well-informed intelligence and his
earnest desire to benefit by the adop-
tion of the best means of industrial and
social improvement the great country
over which he reigns. He is a man of
good natural parts improved by keen
and comprehensive observation and by
study and excels in bis acquaintance
with the results of both literary and
scientific pursuits. In every way a pro-
gressive and exemplary ruler his
death would be a severe blow to Brazil
a country which backward as it is
when compared with the leading states
in Europe and in this country is incal-
culably indebted to Dom Pedro for the
rank it bolds among the nations. His
people have indeed followed him in the
way of improvement but at too great a
distance.
Dom Pedro is a descendant in the di-
rect male line of the House of Braganza
the female line of which is ruling over
Portugal. Eighty years ago. the royal
family of Portugal fied to Brazil. The
colony was declared a kingdom eight
years after. Ln 1821 the Portuguese
court returned to Europe and a national
congress was convened at Rio de
Janeiro. The next year Dom Pedro
eldest son of King Joan VI of Por-
tugal was chosen “ Perpetual De-
fender” of Brazil. Shortly after Brazil
was declared independent of Portugal
and on October 121822 Dom Pedro was
chosen “Constitutional emperor and
perpetual defender.” He abdicated the
crown in 1831 when bls eon the present
emperor saceeeded him. Brazil is gov-
erned constitutionally. Tbere are four
powers in the state—the legislative the
executive the judicial and the sov-
ereign’s prerogative. The ruler of this
vast empire which contains ten millions
or more of Inhabitants receives about
four hundred thousand dollars a year
for his support with appropriate state
and digaity.
The emperor was born on December
21825 the son of the Emperor Pedro I.
and of the Archduchess Leopoldina of
Austria. He was less than five and a
half years old when made emperor. In
July 1840 he was declared of age and
was crowned about a year after. He
was under eighteen years of age when
he married Theresa daughter of King
Francis I of the Two Sicilies a lady
nearly four years older than he. They
have one daughter but no other sur-
viving children. The Princess Izabel la
the crown princes of the empire. She
acted as regent in her father’s prolong-
ed absence from his country a few years
ago. At the age of eighteen she was
married to Prince Louis of Orleans
Comte d’Eu who is the eldest son of the
Duke de Nemourt of the French ex-
Royal House of Bourbon-Orleans. She
is the mother of three sons and the suc-
cessioa to the throne of Brazil is not at
all likely to go a-begging.
Const Percy N. St. Alglere de Du-
bonrg who is said to bo a scion of oae of
the oldest families in France has made
large investments in land near Tallulah
Ga. and proposes to erect a magnifi-
cent chateau there.

hero of “Landy’s Lane” have erected to
his meaaory a handsome sarcophagus in
