WEDNESDAY. SEPTEMBER. 19. 1888.
FOR PRESIDENT
BENJAMIN HARRISON OF INDIANA
FOB VICB-PRESIDENT
LEVI P. MORTON OF NEW YORK.
The judge’s commission to inquire
into the tharges of the London Times
against Parnell and the Irish party
met yesterday and adjourned until
October 22d in order to examine books
and papers. There was a lengthy
discussion as to the righ t of the com-
mission to call for papers Parnell’s
counsel insisting that all papers in
the hands of the Times be produced.
The judges claimed the power but de-
cided to use it at their own discretion.
The Texas Iron News which has a
capacity for irresponsible misrepre-
sentation unequaled and unapproach-
ed by any other journal in Texas says:
“Gen. Harrison has sent in his let-
ter of acceptance. He favors free
whisky high clothing trusts and
monopolists.”
If the News believes what it says
its edttor is a fool; if not then he is a
liar.
The Demo cratic Exponent of Car-
sicana goes for Mills and the Mills-
erats of whom the Exponent says :
“They care about as much for a
crippled confederate private as a
snake does for the toad he swallows.
John Godley is evidence of that.
When a Millacrat talks about war
records it makes honest people feel
like they had swallowed a little tar-
tar emetic”
The Exponent will give aid and
comfort to Col. Jones in his race
agaihst Mills.
When the New York Times in the
interest of Cleveland was fighting
against the renomination of Hill the
Times said:
'“The worst result of the renomina-
tion of Gov. Hill will be that it will
afford a rational basis for the objec-
tion that many worthy people enter-
tain to voting for a democratic candi-
date for any office.”
Now that Governor Hill is renom-
inated by acclamation will the Times
eat crow or will it have the courage of
its pro-convention opinion and de-
nounce Hill as a man whom no ra-
tional democrat can vote for. How
does the Times like Hill’s method of
condoning the offences of Cleveland?
He says “our success in the nation
overthrow all personal consideration.”

So good a democratic Journal as the
El Paso Evening Tribune says of the
Chinese restriction bill:
“The most disgraceful piece of leg-
islation that has ever been rail-roaded
through congress for many years was
the Chinese restriction bill. There is
nothing specially wrong about the
bill. It is a law that should have been
on our statute books long ago but it is
the indecent manner in which it was
rushed Mirough the house before the
action of the Chinese government on
the treaty was known. It was unani-
mously passed by the house without
reference to a committee or debate
simply because no member in the
many of both parties who are opposed
to any such methods had the courage
necessary to object for fear the objec-
tion would lose votes for his party in
the coming election.”
Does not the Tribune know that the
bill was so rushed through iu accord-
ance with the well known and pri-
vately expressed wish of Grover
Cleveland the infallible head of the
democratic party. The republicans
are not engaged in the special busi-
ness of saving the president from dis-
playing his stupidity at this particu-
lar time otherwise the bill would
have taken the regular course. The
measure is an administration one and
for it the democratic members ar
alone responsible.
MINOR MISCELLANY.
A new loan of $5000000 is said to
have been negotiated in England to
complete work on the Hudson river
tunnel.
Little Willie when he first saw his
baby cousin gazed in awed silence
and then whispered: “Mamma is he
a her?”
There are at present 100 less prison-
ers in the Kansas penitentiary than
there were a year ago although the
population of the state has been large-
ly increased.
The pastor in the northwest much
beloved by all his people recently an-
nounced his resignation and immedi-
ately the choir struck up: “Rejoice
and be glad.”
What is claimed to be the longest
chain ever made is in the imperial ar-
senal at Vienna. It has 8000 links
and was used by the Turks to ob-
struct the passage of the Danube in
1529.
General Edward C. Carrington of
Maryland a veteran of the Mexican
war as well as of the union army and
for several j ears district attorney
for the District of Columbia under
Lincoln has resolved to take the
stump for the republican ticket this
season. General Carrington’s father
