WHITE HOUSE SCANDALS.
The attempt to saddle the respon-
sibility of the rumors affecting the
character of the president and some
of his cabinet upon the republican
party is a signal failure. The more
the matter is agitated the more does
it appear damaging to the heads of the
government. The rumors are the
legitimate and necessary outcome of
the practices of those who are affected
by them and no one is to blame for
their publicity save those who becom-
ing acquainted with the facts gave
them away. That these rumors were
not circulated by republican parties
or papers is quite certain for
bad this been the case the facts
would have been given the public
as campaign literature. That they
were not thus given is true and true
because of the forbearance and con-
sideration of republican journals
which refused to publish the matter
notwithstanding the verification of
those facts and the pressure brought
upon the management of said journals
to give them publicity in the interests
of the public morals. These facts af-
fecting the character of the president
and some high officials have been
common rumor in Washington and
New York and Cincinnati for some
time but have been withheld from
the press because the scandal was
such as the journalists into whose
hands knowledge thereof camedeemed
it likely to do more barm than good.
Since however this forbearance has
been misunderstood and republican
journals and officeholders and con-
gressmen have been charged with
originating these scandals the veil
of secrecy is quite likely to be lifted
and the responsibility put where it
belongs witu those whose disreputa-
ble practices have been the theme of
comment.
The following from the editorial
columns of the New York Mail and
Express tells its own story:
'"’QTt is quite remarkable that so
many of the long suppressed truths
regarding the personal habits of Pres-
ident Cleveland and some of his cabi-
net and the speaker should have been
found out at last through denial
given to them by the charming lady
of one of the secretaries. She good
soul could not know of these social
crimes if thev existed and her denial
is as valuable in respect to them as
the denial of Munchausen’s servant
that his master ever ate because he
had never seen him eat. For weeks
before the election we pigeonholed a
verified mass of information on this
subject which we were vainly urged
to publish giving names dates
houses nights hours conversation
intrigues carriages negotiations
liasons boon companions roues in
regard to various persons now and
lately high in national official life
which would shock the country and
cover their principals with ineradica-
ble pitch. The general nature of this
mass of evidence has long been well
understood in Newspaper Row at
Washington in parts both of Cincin-
nati and New York; but owing to the
gallantry of the Cleveland maligned
press has not been made public.
Though it is old stale and fiat there
It would have been the most astonish-
ing latest and disbelieved news to
the charming lady whose jeweled fin-
gers are playing with the veil which
should she pull it down could
never again be replaced to screen
those whom she would so unwillingly
expose. There are other ladles in
Washington who are much better au-
thority on the main subject than any
cabinet lady. There are people in the
white house who are better authority
on the main issue than any cabinet
lady. And all these others have their
moments of weakness or revenge
when their secrets are bigger than
themselves and so overflow; or when
their confidences are like swallows
sunning themselves outside of their
nests for anyone to bag. We in com-
mon with the whole country are in-
tensely Interested to have the mora-
atmosphere of Washington pure and
our public duty to lay bare the real
condition of things there was urged
upon us in almost an overwhelming
way. But when we thought of the
misery which would befall many in-
nocent people the pigeonhole got the
information and not the public; and
now when disclosure is invited by one
of the innocent we still forbear for the
same reason. But we warn the presi-
dent and all associated with him
that they must desist attack upon re-
publican leaders along social lines or
we shall feel relieved of our self-re-
straint. They must call off their dogs
or we may let loose our tigers.”
