WASHINGTON LETTER
। From our lb cular Correspondent.l
Washington Aug 5. 1889.
Daily Light.
The President has had a very busy
time sinee his return here last Thurs-
day and I dare say lie is heartily glad
that he is to start for Bar Harbor o
pay Mr. Blaine a visit to-morrow.
The politicians seemed to recognize
this to be their only opportunity to
get at tlie President before the fall
and they have made the most of it.
Every minute of his available time
ami much that would not have been
available except for his good natured
desire to give all a hearing has been
taken up by his callers. Washing-
ton has suddenly found herself al-
most as full of prominent republicans
as in March. The result is quite a
large batch of appointments and
more are expected to-night or to-mor-
row before the President leaves.
Among the most important among
the appointments were Ex-Gov. War-
mouth of Louisiana to be C'olletor of
the port of New Orleans: John T.
Patty of Louisiana (a colored man)
to be Naval officer at New Orleans
and J. R. G. Pitkin of Louisiana to
be minister to the Argentine Repub
lie.
Postmaster General Wanamaker has
issued an order extending the age
limit governing the appointment of
letter carriers in non-civil service post
offices from thirty-five to forty years.
The age limitation does not apply to
persons honorably discharged from
Army or Navy.
The seizure of the Canadian sealer
“Black Diamond” in Behrings sea
by the U. S. Cutter “Rush” still con-
tinues to be talk about here. One
thing may be set down as certain the
administration is determined to carry
out the law and every vessel caught
illegally taking seals in Behrings sea
will be seized Representative Far-
quhar of New York who was a
prominent member of the Congressio-
nal committee which made the in-
vestigation of the seal fisheries that
led to the enactment of the law under
which this seizure was made is now
in Washington. Speaking of the
seizure and its probable outcome he
said “This country will go right on
asserting and maintaining its juris-
diction over the Behring Sea fisheries
and England can’t say a word in
earnest about the matter. Russia
stands ready to make good our title
derived by purchase from her. Great
Britain cannot afford to antagonize
two great nations—Russia and the
United States. There is no doubt
about Russia’s'disposition in the mat-
ter. They guaranteed us a title and
England cannot seriously question
that title without antagonizing Rus-
sia. If she went into a fight she
would have two antagonists. This
is all well understood in England as
well as in Russia and America.
In answer to the charges made by
certain democratic papers that a cer-
tain pension attorney had been favor-
ed in having applications marked
“special” Commissioner Tanner has
had prepared a list of all the cases
made special since he took charge of
the Pension office. There are 952
cases. Of these 117 had no attorney
98 were represented by Geo. E. Le-
mon 5 by W. W. Dudley 26 by M.
B. Stevans & Co. 22 by Fitzgerald &
Co. 20 by J. W. Morris 17 by T. W.
Talmadge 16 by Soule & Co. 16 by
King Bros. 12 by P. J. Lock wood
11 by A. W. McCormick & Son 11 by
P. O’Farrell 8 by Allan Rutherford
8 by J. B. Gradle—3Bs. The balance
of the cases are distributed among
three hundred and three attorneys
no one of them whom has as many
as eight cases. This statement fully
answers the very silly charges of
favoritism. Commissioner Tanner is
all right up to the present time and
don’t you let it slip your memory.
Assistant Secretary of the Treasury
Tichenor is quite ill. He was attacked
while hard at work in his office. He
has been in bad health for some time
and lately he has overworked him-
self.
Virginia republicans who visit
Washington express great confidence
in carrying the .State this fall.
E. W. Cyster the man who is said
to have compiled the democratic cam-
paign document purporting to give
General Harrison’s record on the
Chinese question has been dismissed
from the Government printing office.
He was greatly surprised as lie ex-
pected to retain his position because
of his prominence in labor organiza-
tions.
Secretary Noble has appointed a
special agent to visit France to in-
vestigate the system of irrigation
used in that country. The infer.na-
tion gained is expected to be of much
benefit in aiding the department to
solve the problem of irrigating the
arid lands of the west.
Representative Williams of Ohio
is here looking after some federal
patronage in his state. He says that
Foraker is certain to be elected and
that his majority will not be less than
twelve thousand. He is not so cer-
tain about the legislature but thinks
the chances are largely in favor of
the republicans.
Public Printer Palmer dismissed
thirty of Senator Gorman’s appointees
last Thursday.
Secretary Proctor came to the city
to confer with the President about
some matters under his department.
He has gone back to Vermont and
Gen. McFeeley is acting Secretary of
War. R.
Among Errors Ruinous to Health.
Ot e of the most mischievous and most com-
mon is the indiscriminate and too frequent
use of purgatives. Such medicines if well
chost n and seasonably resorted to are cer-
tainly useful but many persons select the
worst lly from one to the other and elnploy
them when there is no occasion or their
utility has ceased. To establish on a perma-
nent basis a regular condition of the bowels
the finest alterative is Hostetter's Stomach

succedaneum for those objectionable drugs

drench the bowels like the ordinary evacu-

the habit of body but remedies the disorder

The Verdict Unanimous
W. D Sult Druggist. Bippus Ind. testifies:
“I ean recommend Electric Bitters as the very
best remedy. Every bottle sold has given re-
lief in every case. One man took six bottles
and was cured of Rheumatism of 10 years’
standing.” Abraham Hare Druggist Bell-
ville. Ohio affirms: "The best selling medi-
cine I have ever handled in my 20 years’ ex-
perience. is Electric Bitters.” Thousands of
others have added their testimony so that the
verdict is unanimous that Electric Bitters do
cure all diseases of the Liver Kidt eys or

A Woman’s Discovery.
“Another wonderful discovery has been
made and that too by a lady in this county.
Disease fastened its clutches upon her and
for seven years she withstood its severest
ests but her vital organs were undermined
and death seemed imminent. For three
months she coughed incessantly and could
not sleep. She bought of us a bottle of Dr.
King's New Discovery for Consumption and
was so much relieved on taking first dose that
she slept all night and with one bottle has
been miraculously cured. Her name is Mrs.
Luther Lutz.” Thus write W. G. Hamrick &
