NOT MICHAELS’ LAMP.
Was the Church Set on Fire?
Mr. Chas Michaels who occupies
the parsonage of the colored Baptist
church on Lavacca street recently
burned says that it is not true as
stated in the Express report of that
tire that it was caused by a lamp
which he left burning. Michaels says
that his kitchen tire was out at 5
o’clock that afternoon. At 8:30 he
left the house and came up town with
his daughter who was attending a
society meeting. Before leaving he
took his children to their grand-
mother carefully put out his light
locked his doors and closed his gate.
He had not returned when the lire
broke out but his neighbors say that
a fire was built against thesideof the
house from the outside or at least
there is where the fire was first seen
burning. He most positively denies
having left any tire in his stove or
any lamp burning in his house.

Texas Rifle Team.
Competitive tiring opens to-day at
the rifle range continuing four days.
The practice to-day and Wednesday
next the 14th inst. will be at known
distance targets 200 300 '>oo and 600
yards. Monday and Tuesday the
11th and 12th inst. the tiring will be
at unknown distance skirmish firing.
The ten men out of the twenty com-
peting who make the best aggregate
score in the four days firing will con-
stitute the rille team for the depart-
ment of Texas. The ten men making
the best score in the preliminary
firing are Kuhlman Rose. Titus Fel-
lows Perkins Powell Ohlschlager
Haton Smith and Foss.
Moistened the Earth.
The steady wind from the north-
east which blew all day yesterday
very sensibly cooled the air the ther-
mometer rising no higher than 91 de-
crees the coolest day for four weeks
past. Heavy clouds gathered in the
east and north-east and some heavy
drops began to fall very early in the
afternoon. About six o’clock the
pattering of the rain upon the tin
roofs became quite lively and an
hour later a steady rain was falling
which increased in force until nearly
midnight the downpour continuing
with slight intermissions until day-
light. The rain comes most oppor-
tunely and will greatly refresh the
foliage and help the growing crops.
Cotton will be very materially bene-
fitted by this rain as it will prevent
the squares from droppins but the
damp ground will favor the worms
and keep the planters hustling to get
the best of them. Texas prospects
never were so promising as to-day.
To My Friends and Patrons
Having formed a co-partnership
with Col. P. G. Rucker and Geo. H.
Hartwell both gentlemen of high
standing and thoroughly acquainted
with land matters having been in
the real estate business in Texas for I
many years I would most earnestly
request and ask your patronage for
our new firm which I consider a
strong team pledging to you that all
business intrusted to our care will re-
ceive the best and strictest attention.
Col. Rucker and Mr. Hartwell will
have have charge of the office No. 1
West Houston street where comfort-
fortable conveyances are ou hand at all
times to show you property through-
out the city. I shall in future devote
the greater part of my time in the or-
ganization of land syndicates and col-
onists for buying and locating in San
Antonio ami Southwest Texas by
northern and eastern people with
whom 1 have become well acquainted
in the last ten years through landed
and business transactions. Much of
my time has been devoted for the last
three years in studying up the habits
of the boomers who have built up so
many cities in the United States ami
with this information firmly stamped
into my mind I propose to use it in
the strongest type for San Antonio
and Southwest Texas.
Thanking you for all past favors and
hoping to receive at least a share of
your patronage I remain very re-
spectfully

A Courageous Executive.

“No man” says Gov. Foraker “is
worthy to enjoy the free institutions
of America who rebels against a duly
enacted statute and defies the author-
itity intrusted with its enforcement.
Smite every manifestation of such a
spirit with a heavy hand.” We
doubt if any man in public life has
made a bolder avowal of faith under
circumstances so critical as those in
which Gov. Foraker is placed. He is
a candidate for re-election and the
votes of several liquor dealers are
worth seeking after but it matters
not to the courageous governor; the
triumph of law is the first thing that
a patriot seeks after the triumph of
his party the second his owu ad-
vancement the last. Gov. Foraker
never stood so well with the great
body of his countrymen as since the
publication of his letter to the mayor
of Cincinnati.
