WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 11 1889.
The woman geta there. Washing-
ton as a state grants woman the
suffrage; and North Dakota places
it in the hands of her legislature to
confer it whenever a majority of the
state legislature so desire.
In remitting the taxes of the crema-
tion society and putting that associa-
tion on a par with other burial asso-
tion the city council has done justly.
The members of that incineration
organization certainly have a right
to chose their own methods of dis-
posing of their dead.
As intimated in yesterday's dis-
patches the last hours of Sunset Cox
were rapidly approaching. The end
came at 8:35 last evening quietly and
peacefully as sleep comes to a tired
body. He was the same genial sun-
ny tempered humorous soul to the
very end Heart failure resulting in
peritonitis was the cause of his death.
A typical American statesman has
gone and the country will not soon
see his counterpart. He was an able
man and an honest democrat.
The Light believes in the Grand
Army of the Republic; believes in
maintaining the glory roll of those
who perilled life for the salvation of
the nation ; believes In pensioning the
maimed and disabled soldiers and
providing homes for the homeless;
but it does not believe in a service
pension nor does it believe that the
government has dealt illiberally with
the boys in blue. No government on
God’s green earth has done more for
the comfort and maintainance of its
soldiers than has this American Re-
public.
If Any action of the city council
can give the merchants of Commerce
street between the plazas relief it
should be granted. It is now a
month since that street was torn up
amt business interrupted and during
two weeks of that time the paving
contractors have had no force at work.
At present rate of progress it will be
well along toward the holidays if not
after before Main plaza is reached
and if the work can be expedited by
putting on a night force by all means
let the city provide for the necessary
lighting and all else needed to put
that street the principal business
thoroughfare in condition for travel.
A hundred dollars a day is no object
beside the importance of having that
street paved in reasonable time. In
no city outside of San Antonio would
its principal street have been left for
two day’s as Commerce street has
been left for two weeks.
The request comes from the Fair
management for the offering of spec-
ial premiums for certain exhibits
such as may suit the fancy of the
donor of the special premium to offer.
These special premiums are pub-
lished as a part of the regular pre-
mium list of the Fair and will be a
means of advertising the business of
those who offer them as perhaps
nothing else would. The offering of
such premiums not only advertises
the offerer but it very naturally
helps out the premium list. It is not
the value of the premium that is
prized so much as it is the fact of
securing something that may be kept
as a reminder of the excellency which
secured an award.
byrup of Figs
Produced from the laxative and nu-
tricious juice of California tigs com-
bined with the medicinal virtues of
plants known to be most beneficial to
the human system acts gently on the
kidneys liver and bowels effectually
cleansing the system dispelling colds
and headaches and curing habitual
constipation. (7) 4-10-tf
Old Neptune was on a bender yes-
terday and the way he lashed the At-
lantic seaboard was an astonisher
even to old salts. This is the result of
the high winds which have prevailed
at sea and which rolled in upon the
New Jersey coast in mightier tides
than have been noted since the close
of the war. The low Jersey lands
were all submerged and the Manhat-
tan beach came in for a drenching.
The waves rolled over the breakwater
and the marine railway between
Brighton and Manhattan was swept
away. The lower end of Blackwell’s
island was submerged and prisoners
bad to be removed to higher quarters.
Hudson river has risen under the im-
petus of this influx of water as never
before and as high up as Poughkeep-
sie the water has covered the dock for
100 feet beyond the usual high tide
water line. The wind has not sub-
sided and great tears of loss of life on
land as well as at sea are entertained.
The loss of property has been very
great as all cellars and first floors
along the lower New York water
front are flooded as all the islands and
low lands and beaches on the New
York and Jersey coasts. Telephone
and telegraph line - are down on Long
Island an t desolation reigns today.

WORLD'S FAIR 1892.
Public Opinion has gone practically
to work to ascertain if possible the
prevailing sentiment of commercial
and municipal America on the loca-
tion of the World’s Pair of 18 )2. This
was done by addressing a circular
to the mayors of all cities in the
United States of over 15000 popula-
tion and to the secretaries of over
three hundred representative commer-
cial organizations requesting an an-
swer to the following questions :
1. In what city in your opinion
should the world’s exposition of 18 1”
be held ?
2. Should the expenses be defrayed
by national appropriation private
subscription or both?
To these enquiries 138 replies
had been received to date of August
tith and Washington was the choice
of 55; New York the choice of 34; Chi-
cago the choice of 36; St. Louis the
choice of 8; with two for Cincinnati
and one each for Boston Buffalo and
Philadelphia. These answers came
from as far southeast as Florida as
far southwest as Texas as far north-
west as Duluth and as far northeast
as Maine. These replies show a de-
cided disinclination to locate the Ex-
position in the Mississippi Valley
the votes for Washington and New
York leading those for all other sec-
tions combined by 49 and forming
nearly two thirds of the whole.
This very accurately represents the
general sentiment which is very
largely in favor of the Atlantic sea-
boardand more in favor of the nation-
al capital than any where else. Eighty
one of these replies are from interior
states that is the states which do not
border on the Atlantic seaboard. Of
the eight votes cast for St. Louis six
were from the state of Missouri itself
the other two from Arkansas proving
that the preference for St. Louis is
quite sectional and circumscribed
within very narrow limits. Of the
thirty-six votes cast for Chicago thir-
ty-one are from the states of Illinois
lowa Indiana Michigan Min-
nesota Wisconsin and Ohio showing
that the preference for Chicago is not
generalthere being but one vote from
the Atlantic states and not one from
the southern states in her favor. Of
| the thirty-four votes cast for New
| York eighteen are from New York
New Jersey and Pennsylvania and
I <»i the remaining sixteen nine are
from the New England states.
| I’he fifty-five votes cast tor Wash-
ington represent twenty-eight differ-
ent states and these as far west as
Kansas as far south as Florida
as far northeast as Maine as far north-
west as Council Bluff lowa. The
vote for Washington is more repre-
sentative than that for any other
place there being double the number
of states represented that are repre-
sented in the New York vote and
nearly three times as many as are rep-
resented in the Chicago vote. If
these answers and thi& canvass and
these figures mean anything they
mean an unmistakable public senti-
ment in favor of the national capital
as the place for holding the great
World’s Fair of 1892.
Not less unmistakable is the senti-
ment in favor of national aid which to
a very great extent involves the idea
of national management. Of the 138
replies to the second question 35 favor
a national appropriation exclusively;
103 lavor both national aid and pri-
vate subscription combined. Of
the remainder ten favor aid
from the government to sup-
plement private subscription and
the others are divided between
private state and municipal aid and
stock subscriptions. There can be
but one deduction from these figures
and that is that national aid meets the
great majority of views expressed in
these answers. The advocates of New
Y'ork as the location vote more votes
for making it a purely private enter-
prize than do the advocates of all
ocher locations combined. More south-
ern votes favor Washington than any
other section and it is certain that
the national capital can present more
and weightier reasons why the great
exposition which commemorates the
four hundredth anniversary ofColum-
bus’ landing on these shores should
be celebrated there than can be pre-
sented in favor of any location. The
Light advocated the selection of the
national capital two months since and
sees no reason to change the opinion
at that time expressed.

The movement to endow an Irish
university by the Salisbury govern-
ment as a sop to the catholic party
meets strong opposition on the part
of the Orangemen. It matters not
Salisbury’s government will turn
any corner to defeat Parnell and
would give Ireland home rule tomor-
row if they felt that Parnelism was
likely to succeed. The Irish party
for their part will take all Salisbury
gives them and make it the stepping
stone to something more. It is home
government they ask and will take it
at Salisbury’s hands if he offers it.
