REPAIRING SHOPS
OF THE GREAT HUNTINGTON
ROAD.
San Antonio's Establishment Second
to None Located Along This
System.
One of the institutions that go a
great way to benefit the city and at
the same time without attracting
much attention is the great maeiiine
and repair shops of the Southern Pa-
cific railway. These shops and round
house under the supervision of Mr.
Ed. Ryan give employment tw about
160 men—employing more men who
receive better wages than any single
establishment in the city.
The Southern Pacific railway be-
sides boosting the city by its excel-
lent facilities and connections dis-
tributes among our population about
50 per cent of its earnings at this
point the pay rolls being nearly
$50000 monthly or half a million
yearly. The greater part of this sum
goes to the men in the shops.
A walk through the great
shops is a pleasant experience
for which purpose a pass must be
procured beforehand from Foreman
Ryan or the vigilant watchmen will
not be slow in bouncing the visitor
not provided with such an open-
sesamo. Passing through the great
door you enter the machine depart-
ment employing some forty men.
This department is equipped with
machinery of the latest type con-
sisting principally of lathes and
planers for the fine work. Here may
be seen several dismantled engines
those iron horses of commerce; sick
steeds who are being physicked by
the skillful mechanics.
The various ponderous machines
excite feelings of interest and pleas-
ure in watching their systematic
movements and rythmic sounds.
Passing on we go through a door
and enter the blacksmith shop. Here
are seven or eight fires in full blast
and busily working around these are
twelve or fourteen grimy smiths all
hammering away at some huge piece
ot Iron or fashioning some large tool
or material for car or engine equip-
ment. In addition to the muscular
power utilized in the shape of several
darkey sledgers there is an immense
hammer weighing 1000 pounds which
is worked by steam and a tremend-
ous power it wields too.
Leaving this interesting room we
pass through another partition and
gaze on the heart and soul of this im-
mense establishment. This is the
great boiler and engine that moves
all the machines and supplies the car-
yard with steam tor the air-pumps.
This has an eighty-horse power and it
may be called the ruling spirit of the
institution. Having finished our in-
spection of the machine shops and its
workings we pass through the round-
house. This is a great horse-shoe
shaped ring built entirely of iron
and brick and containing stalls for
twenty-four engines a number at
present occupying their stalls like
horses of burden whose day’s work
Is done.
The grooms who do the work of
this department may be seen busily
cleaning and brightening up the
steeds just brought in from tne road
and perhaps repairing a casual injury.
Over there are some of the men en-
gaged in building fires and raising
steam in some engine that has been
ordered out. Some men are engaged
in filling the sand-box as a precau-
tion against a slippery track. Every-
thing being ready the engineer steps
into the cab and the engine fresh
from the hostler’s hands seems in-
spired to new energy as she glides
over the rails. This department em-
ploys about 35 men who are divided
into day and nignt forces.
Leaving the round-house we cross
the track and approach the boiler
house when our ears are greeted by
a succession of sounds vieing with the
fabled Babel. A great part of this
unmusical clamor comes from an im-
mense irou cylinder which is being
revolved by a shaft connecting with
the turning wheels in the boiler house.
Inside of this loud-voiced cyliuder are
the boiler tubes of some locomotives
that have been encrusted with scales
from the condensing water and these
are being rolled and tumbled against
one another as a cleaning proceeds
which is surely effective if we judge
from the clouds of white dust issuing
from the cleaning machine. Enter-
ing the boiler house which was for-
merly the machine shop before the
brick buildings were erected we are
assailed by another succession of
sounds this time from the hammers
wielded by the boiler makersw ho are
engaged in riveting the heavy plates.
Here may be seen several locomo-
tives for which new boilers or fire
boxes have been ordered. There are
some 29 men attached to this depart-
ment which is equipped with mod-
ern appliances.
Beside these there are the ‘carpen-
ters’ department employing 12 men;
the copper and tin work shop employ-
ing 5 men the car department having
14 men and the paint shop four men.
The paint shop is a new institution
and will do the painting of
cars that was formerly done
at Houston. These shops and round-
house are vastly different from what
they were one year ago. At that time
they were built of wood and danger-
ous from their susceptibility to fires.
Since that time the new brick build-
ings have been occupied and the
frame buildings left standing have
been made tire proof by corrugated
iron. The working force lias been
greatly increased and some ot the
most improved machinery added.
A talk with Foreman Ryan finishes
our inspection ot this establishment.
Mr. Ryan is an efficient mechan-
ic whose head lias become gray
in the trade. He has several
rooms for use as an office and store
room but they are not equal to his
needs but the company have promis-
ed more peteutions quarters. He has
a force of clerks and an expert
draughtsman and modeler Mr.
Chas. M. Schilling who has an office
of his own. These shops were es-
tablished in San Antonio in the year
1881. They were originally establish-
ed at Harrisburg but after the great
tire they’ were removed here Mr.
Ryan the present foreman taking
charge in 1885. Besides his duties here
he superintends the round houses at
Del Rio and Glidden.
A pleasing feature is the number of
apprentices who are employed in the
various departments. These are
drawn from boys of the city who are
being trained as excellent mechanics.
This is a feature that will be com-
meded by everybody. The appren-
tices are divided as follows: In ma-
chine shops 7; boiler house 7; paint
shop 2; copper and tin shop 2; black-
smith shop 1.
As the greatest industrial institu-
tion in the city it is deserving of no-
tice from the benefit it brings the
city and the number of wage-earners
will be constantly increased as the
business of the road demands.

A QUESTIONABLE DODGE.
It has become so common of late to
regale the public with such very in-
teresting stories about one or another
“curious incident’’ which stories al-
ways end in some humbug advertise-
ment scheme that one rarely ever
knows whether he can spenu time in
reading any newspaper statement
whatever. Ths unlicensed extent to
which such practices are being carried
would seem to call for a law to sup-
press the use of the public prints for
purposes of deception for what bet-
ter is it in morals to take a man’s
time under false pretences than to
take his money? Let everybody es-
chew all such dodges and patroniz-
only outspoken and reliable advertls.
