liquor withdrawals. .
In returning two indictments in the
case here in .'no of which Langley
was named alone and in the other
jointlv with all of the accused the
federal grand jury also mimed Jolin
F. Kramer former prohibition com-
missioner. and Elias H. Mortimer
star witness before the t hicago
grand jury which investigated alleged
veterans' bureau frauds as being in-
volved in the alleged conspiracy. They
were not indicted however because
they went before the grand jury as
witnesses.
Those indicted with Representative
Langley and West were Russell M.
Sackett a prohibition agent in Penn-
sylvania : Ben L. Moses and Harry
Sattler co-partners trading as the
Tnion Drug t ompang and Sidney

Charged With Conspiracy.
Thev wore charged with conspiring
to pay $lOOOOO to Mortimer and Her-
man Geltzeiler and Donald J. De-

they gave testimony to bring about
the' purchase withdrawal and trans-
portation of whiskey from a distillery •
warehouse to the Tnion Drug Com-|

the amount was to have been paid
Langley for inducing Kramer. West. I

the time was prohibition agent at
Pittsburg to “connive" for the removal
and transportation of the liquor.

but his attorney H. E. Davis de-
clared in a statement that Langley "is
absolutely innocent of the charge-"
assorting he knew the "movers in the
matter and their motives." Mr. Davis
said the "sufferers in this business
will not include Mr. Lgngley."
Zihlman Not Mentioned.
Representative Zihlman (Republi
can I. Maryland who recently on the
floor of She House protested inno-
cence of any wrong doing after de-
claring he understood he was one of
the two members of Congress referred
to in the Chicago grand jury report
was not mentioned in the Washington
jury report. Representative Langley
also made a similar statement in the
House at the time.
The special House committee which
has been .investigating informally the
charges referred to in the Chicago
grand jury's report pending the grand
jury findings here was called together
today to decide what course it will
pursue. Chairman Burton said the
committee undoubtedly will proceed
with its investigation next week but
it has not been decided whether to
hold public hearings.

Excise Tax Schedules to Be
Taken Up in Order
Next.
Washington. D. C.. March 28 —
The Senate Finance Committee today
took up the corporation tax section of
the revenue bill having concluded
its work last night on practically al!
of the administrative provisions.
Most of the latter have been agreed !
as as passed by the House.
The various miscellaneous and ex-
cise tax schedules now will be taken
up in order. Most of these were re-
vised by the House which reduced and
replaced some of them to the ex ten;
of more than $100000000 a year on
the basis of past returns.
Mith the Mellon income tax rate
schedule again in the bill it is ex-
pected the Senate committee will
again revise these miscellaneous
schedules to conform more nearly to
the treasury secretary's proposals
dealing with them which did not eon-
template such extensive reductions as
were made by the House. The in-

MACDONALD TO MAKE
EFFORT TO SETTLE
BUS STRIKE FRIDAY
Electrical Workers to Walk
Out If Agreement Not
Reached.
By the AMOclatvd frew.
Ixindon .March 28.—London and
much of England today await with
deep cancern the outcome of negotia-
tions announced by the premier last
night for settlement of the trnm and
bus strike. _ The people built eager
holies on Mr. MacDonald's statement
that both sides nre desirious of a
settlement but there is no sign at
present that either party to the dis-
pute is likely to give way.
Unless a settlement or some work-
able compromise emerges from today's
conference the subway men and work-
ers on the electric surface lines around
London will strike at midnight and as
many of London's seven millions
habitually travel by these routes they
will be .dependent on walking.
Electrical workers served an ulti-
matum on the government overnight
that failing settlement of the tram-
way men's grievances London will be
in darkness Saturday night the Daily
Express states.
Against this is another statement
that the cut off of electric supply de-
pends rather on the head engineers
and supervifors than the electrical
trades unionists and that the former

Many citizens are volunteering their
help to insure continuance of public
service*. Two organizations the Na-
tional Citizens' Union and the British
Fascisti have offered their services
and the government claims to be able
to provide mnny motor drivers and
men to protect property and prevent
violence. The Fascisti organization is
a new one of which the public knows
little.
The government is said to be ac-
tively preparing to assist in trans-
portation und qther public needs if a
state of emergency is declared but
the prediction is made that if it at-
tempts to carry out these plans there
will be such hostility in the ranks of
the Labor Party that the government’s
continuance in office will become im-
possible.
Most of the London editorial
writers severely score the trade union
lenders especially Ernest Bevans su-
perintendent of the transport union
who is the chief of the present move-
ment. These leaders are hotly charged
with making war on the public and
establishing what is declared to be
virtually a revolutionary dictatorship
of the country by the trad4 unions.
The writers maintain that the ques-
tion now is whether the unions or his
majesty's ministers ars to rule the
country.
