TIX SLASH BILL
HITS m
OF MELLON
Expect Inheritance Clause
Will Bring Opposition
From Westerners.
WASHINGTON D. C. Jan. 10.—
4^l—Despite agreement of Republi-
cana and Democrats of the Senate
finance committee on the tax reduc-
tion compromise bill it awaited ap-
proval today by the Treasury as well
us some senators.
Pending a study of the exact extent
tif reduction provided by the measure
(Secretary Mellon is withholding defin-
ite approval. He had naked that
reduction be limited to $330000000
as provided in the House measure
but Chairman Smoot of the finance
committee estimates the bill now calls
for about $300000000 reduction.
Repeal of the inheritance tax and
retroactive reduction on the inherit-
ance rates him cauaed definite indica-
tions of opposition from groups of
.Western senators of both parties.
Overwhelming support for the mens-
lire however appears assured with
the compromise reached by the parties
und passage of the measure before
March 15 when first income tax in-
stallments are due is considered
likely.
The bill was in the hands of print-
ers today but Chairman Smoot ex-
pressed doubt that he would be able
to present it. to the Senate before
tomorrow with consideration begin-
ning near the end of the week.
