Mission Grove Residents
Excited Over ‘Strike’
in City Limits.
By BESS CARROLL
Did you ever find a S 3 bill in your
pocket when “’twas the day before
payday and not a nickel was stirring
—not even a dime" and you thought
that all you had in the aforesaid
pocket was a bole?
Or fr instance did yon ever hear
an undertaker talking against prohibi-
tion or find any ham in a ham sand-
wich or see your wife wear an old
hat for-Easter?
Little shocks like these are small
compared with finding an oil well in
your own backyard 1 That's the opin-
ion of W. H. Hearne. San Antonio
real estate man who discovered oil
in a shallow hole in the backyard of
a house he owns in Mission Grove —
218 Wearer street —while workmen
were digging a well.
11-FOOT HOLE.
Yes air of all the shocking things—
Including lire wires spring bathing
costumes and vapo-rub cocktails. Mr.
Hearne agrees that the most electrify-
ing of all is to find a little gusher
where only clothe* lines and garbage
cans grew before.
There's an unassuming 11-foot hole
on Weaver street filled at the bot-
tom with a black liquid that looks
like cattle dip land tastes even worse
as local bootleggers agree). And. if
the workmen's hearts had not been
strong there might be one or two dead
men to tell this newest and most
Bove! tale in the long history of oil.
PLAN TESTS.
'Spose you were digging a well ex-
pecting to find nothing more than a
little dirt and some grubworms and
"aqua pura” and suddenly the ex-
quisite aroma of crude oil assailed
your nostrils? Perhaps you would do
just as Mr. Hearne admitted the "dis-
coverers" of San Antonio's residential
oil well did —behave for a few minutes
like you might have just imbibed a
sip of "bottled in the barn” sarsapar-
illa—er. lemonade.
Mr. Hearne a builder uses gravel
Jn his work. He had noticed a fine
deposit in the backyard of his prop-
erty on Weaver street so he was
studying gravel strata when the un-
expected well came in.
DEVELOP FIELD.
“It was sort of like finding a mil-
lion dollars in the family album —at
first” Mr. Hearne declared.
Mr. Hearne expects to have expert
tests made to determ’ne the advisabil-
ity of developing the new “field.”
Meantime the neighbors on Weaver
street can be seen toiling with spades
and shovels 'way into the woe hours
of the night—for even better than
robbing a bank or feeding rat poison
to your rich uncle is having a private
oil well on the premises you know I
The news of San Antonio’s newest
oil well will be wormwood to a cer-
tain oil man. who recently sold Mis-
sion Grove to Mr. Hearne without
realizing that he was signing away
the making of some gushers.
BACKYARD WEALTH.
Although Mr. Hearne has sold *U
of bis interests in Mission Grove ex-
cept the narrow strip where rhe well
was found he says that he will make
every effort to have the place devel-
oped in order to give the folk of the
suburb a chance to become oil mag-
nate and millionaires from their own
backyards.
And before long instead of raising
turnips in their backyard gardens the
people of Mission Grove may be rais-
ing gushers—who knows?
