THE SAN ANTONIO LIGHT
Houston Street
Today!
San Antonio was
a good town.
—but it could not grow
without Public Utilities
B" j| ACK to the good old days. Who really wants to go back? Days of the Old
Oaken Bucket the coal scuttle and the oily lamp; the wood shed and the “One
$ Hoss Shay.” Fifty years ago San Antonio was a good town; today it is the
y best town in the biggest state in the Union. If the pioneers of ’79 could see
Houston street today they could hardly realize the changes of a half century.
Time today is measured by minutes and not by miles thanks to the Electric Railway.
Homes have sprung up miles and miles from the din and roar of business and industry.
Adequate transportation has made communities expand into great cities. Electricity and
gas service has revolutionized home and industry. The Main Street of ’79 is the Broad-
way of today; electricity has turned night into day and converted the narrow gloomy
channels of commerce into great White Ways.
Nothing has changed our method of living more in the past half century than the de-
velopment of public utilities and the marvelous services they render. The future of this
great industry as the past is in the hands of the public. With proper support encourage-
ment and co-operation this industry still in infancy will be of even greater benefit to
humanity for its possibilities and blessings have scarcely been scratched.
