On Political II ords
Politics and political campaigns have introduced
many new words and phrases into our language. How
many of the following do you recognize. Try for
five correct answers.
Q_When a legislature "gerrymanders” it is
tai procrastinating on legislation: (b) establishing
committees and choosing chairmen; (c) creating dis-
torted representative districts.
A__(c. The term, a combination of Gerry and
salamander, originated in Massachusetts in 1812
when the legislature, under Gov. Elbridge Gerry,
arranged the senatorial districts to aid the Demo-
cratic-Republican candidates against the Federalists
One of the districts appeared to have the shape of a
salamander.
Q—What was “waving the bloody shirt?”
A_Northern Republicans who campaigned imme-
diately after the Civil War on the platform of hav-
ing saved the Union were "waving the bloody shirt-
One of the strongest forms of this was an appeal to
Union veterans to “vote as you shot.
Q—"Back to Normalcy" was the slogan in the cam-
paign of (a) 1920; (bi 19.36; <ci 1952?
A—a. Warren G. Harding called for "norm-
alcy" when he accepted the Republican nomination
for’president.
Q—Who is supposed to have said. "We will
spend and spend, tax and tax. elect and elect?
A—This saying was attributed to Harry L. Hop-
kins. right-hand-man to President Roosevelt and was
used by opponents of the New Deal to describe the
economic and political policies of the Democrats.
There is some doubt whether Hopkins actually made
the statement.
Q—When a candidate "stumps ' the nation, is he
(a) making speeches; tbi polling voters; (c) lining
up convention votes?
A— a). The term originated in early American
political campaigns when frontier candidates used
tree stumps as rostrums for their, speeches.________

A week like this is not missed by people in other
parts of the state
lor instance, the day after Denton voters passed
their capital improvements bond issue, a Dallas
newspaper had this to sav about Denton in an edi-
torial: "Denton, strong in educational facilities and
strategic location at the top of the Dallas-Fort Worth-
Denton triangle, continues to set a fast pace of pro-
gress” : .
Denton County voters have another reason to be
proud also Planning that came before the bond
issues was nothing. Jess than excellent.
A total of $7.5 million in bonds was voted, yet
there wil be no.increase in taxes noin -ease in
Denton electrical rates and no increase in Flow Me-
morial Hospital charges-as a result of the bond is-
sues.
So. in effect, Denton and Denton county voters
got $7 5 million in improvements free
But wait, theres more to the story There will
be more than $7.5 million in improvements as a re-
sult of the bond issues
in Denton, city officials, will match the $6 5 bond
money with $3,570,000 in unspent bond ri onev and
revenue surplus to finance a total of $10,070,000
in capital improvements.
The $1 million you approved Saturday for expan-
sion at Flow Hospital will be matched with $1 mil-
lion in federal funds, authorized under the Hill-Bur-
ton law
That's a total of $12,070,000 in capital improve-
ments just because you voted ' ye in two bond
elections
Sow don't expect $12070.000 in improvements
to spring up Monday. City officials sav it will take
