DALLAS — The Delia* Cowboy defense
was one of the most awesome defensive
units in the NFL in 1977 and over the last
three games the 78 Cowboy defense has
resembled the one of a year ago.
The Cowboy defenders have now gone 11
quarters without allowing the opposition a

a good quarterback and they can put the
points on the board," said Landry "If they
put it together, they can beat anyone in the
league.”
Landry announced one roster change for
Sunday's game. Second-year man Larry
Brinson has been recalled to replace Doug
Dennison on the roster after Dennison
suffered a severly sprained left knee in the
New York game. Brinson was cut in the last
. player cut and baa been working with the
University of Florida coaching staff. He
worked out with the Cowboys Monday
Landry said be saw some improvement in
the Dallas offense against the Giants but
stated more improvement was needed.
"We’ve got to continue to improve
There's still a lot of tough football games
coming up,” said the Dallas coach. “We’re
still hitting and missing on offense and we
must get more consistency "
Landry announced that 12-year veteran
Rayfield Wright will start in place of Andy
Frederick at right offensive tackle this week
after his performance against the Giants
last Sunday.
Dallas, even with its 24-3 win over New
York, still trails Washington by two full
games in the standings and Landry says
they are in s must-win situation

“St Louis still has good personnel, Hartls - formaace for everyone in the Eastern
against Dallas, and coach Tom Landry said
flatly that he didn't know how to stop him.
“Your guess is as good as mine,” he
confessed.
The Cardinals have altered their offense
this year to make it even more difficult to
defense Gray.
"They've been trying to hide Gray,”
special assistant Ermal Allen said Tuesday.
"They’ve been shifting Gray to either side
forcing the defense to call two signals in the
huddle.”
Quarterback Jim Hart was sacked four
times in last Sunday’s game, which. Alien
said, had to be some kind of a record for
him. His use of the play-action peas to bold
the linebackers and the quick down-and-in
patterns by his receivers have allowed Hart
to remain standing in the backfield meet of
the time.
"They run the same play to either side,"
Allen said And you must be ready to
double both sides or give them one side man-
to-man."
Obviously the Cards would love to have
Gray man-to-man on the Cowboys an
Sunday, and this is one problem the Pokes
haven't been able to aolve
Allen said the Cowboys will have to be on
the lockout for screens and draws, which
can be effective when a team has been

season with a 0-6 record, but Landry isn't
taking the Cardinals lightly
of the St. Louis game on Sept. 24 when Mel
Gray caught a nine-yard touchdown pass
from Jim Hart.
St. Louis didn't get another touchdown
that day nor did Washington last week or
New York Sunday. Dallas held the Redskins
to three field goals and allowed the Giants
just one three-pointer.
“I thought we played better defense
Sunday than we had in recent weeks,” said
Dallas coach Tom Landry Tuesday at his
weekly press luncheon. “The defense
controlled the game against the Giants It
was the type of game they needed "
Dallas will put that 11 quarter string on
the line Sunday when they travel to St. Louis
to meet the Cardinals, who have a string
they would like to break against the
Cowboys. St. Louis is still winlees in the 1*7*
the ground with 174.2 yards per game.
The Cardinals have been stingy with their
pass defense, allowing 108.5 yards per
game. But on defense against the rush, St. ,
Louis is last in the league, giving up a little
over 202 yards each Sunday
So it looks like Tony Dorsett and Robert
Newhouse are going to be buoy this
weekend. As of the New York game, Dorsett
was still leading the NFL in rushing with 584
yards in 117 attempts for a five-yard
average. Newhouse has carried «7 times for
M yards and an average of *4.3 yards per
bn the other side of the coin, the Car-
dinals, with a strong passing game, will be
going against the Cowboys wno are hovering
somewhere near the middle of the pack in
dam defense
With the absence of Terry Metcalf. Jim
Hart has had to rely more strongly on his
passing attack And it just so happens that
Hart’s favorite receiver is also the greatest
nemesis of the Pokes, Mel Gray in fact, the
last touchdown that was scored against the
Cowboy* was 13 quarters ago when Gray
caught a TD pass behind Cliff Harris and
Benny Barnes. * *
In their Mas to the Baltimore Colts last
Sunday, Gray caught six passes for 113
yards He now has 22 catches which puts
him second in the league in receptions
Gray always seems to have a good game

division and we have to play to that level,”
said Landry. "H Washington wins, we have
to win."
With 10 games still remaining in the
regular season and with the Redskins in the
driver’s seat, Landry is already thinking
about the playoffs
“I think it’s going to take a streak of 3-2 in
the last 10 games to make the playoffs,”
predicted Landry. "It's hard to say with the
new 16-game format just what type of
record it will take to make the playoffs but I
would think a 134 record would be good
enough. You're guess is as good as mine."
The Cowboys won’t be getting any
breathers in the next few weeks. Following
St Louis they play Philadelphia, Minnesota
and Miami
