Washington and Idaho are considering
alternatives to protect the spawning runs
That could mean curtailment of sport
fishing or possible elimination of any
fishing during spawning.
"The decision was made sometime ago
to build dams and try to maintain the fish,
and that hasn't been entirely successful,"
said Herb Pollard. Idaho’s state fishery
manager "The wild fish in some areas are
at least close enough to extinction that it’s
appropriate to study it further The runs
below Hells Canyon Dam and some others
have been reduced to remnant statue."

controversy, and at least one lawsuit

The problems prompted Herman
McDevitt of Pocetello to suggest a study of
Chinook runs to determine whether the fish
come under the Endangered Spec tea Act of
1973.
Idaho has sued Oregon and Washington,
claiming the state is not receiving its fair
share of chinook.
