WASHINGTON, DC — Sen Lloyd Bentsen is
looking for older Texans o work in his
Washington office as senior citizen interns for
two weeks this May
Bentsen, who is co-sponsoring legislation to
establish a permanent Senior Citizen Program in
Congress, asks that any interested Texans, age
65 or older, write to his office .
"Every day in this country 5,000 people
celebrate their 65th bithday," the senator said
One out of every 10 Americans is a senior
citizen with special concerns about crime and
housing and health care and about maintaining
their dignity and. if possible their independence
"They also have special skills to offer and a
wisdom that comes only with age, " Bentsen said
"The senior citizen intern program not only
offers these Texans valuable information on the
workings of Congress and the federal
bureaucracy, but also provides a forum for the
mutual exchange of ideas on the problems of the
aging," Bentsen said
This is the third consecutive year Bentsen has
participated in the senior citizen intern program
The program this year will be conducted May
7-18 The interns will take part rin working
sessions with Cabinet and agency officials. White
House briefings and congressional committee
hearings, all related to the problems of aging
The interns will also assist regular staff with
various duties and assignments
Anyone interested should write to the senator
at the Russell Senate Office Building.
