Dear Val: Why would a perfectly lovely girl let
herself become a mess? I'm talking about my wife
When I married her 10 years ago, she was lovely to
look at, delightful to be with. I loved her, was happy
and proud that she was my wife.
Since then, she's gained at least 40 pounds She’s
very careless about the clothes she buys and wears
— never looks smart anymore She doesn 't seem to
care whether the house is clean or not. I'm ashamed
to ask people to visit There's very little com-
panionship or sex in our lives.
Maybe if we'd bad children, it would be different
We couldn't because, unfortunately, I have a low
sperm count. *
If you know the answer to all this. I'd sure like to
hear it. — Unhappy
Dear Un: When you learned that you had a low
sperm count, did you and your wife consider
adoption? After marriage, did you continue to woo
her — compliment her now and then, take her out,
surprise her with a little gift? In your sexual life, did
you make certain she was being satisfied?

DEAR DR. LAMB — I need something for hands
that just crack open like you had cut them with a
knife. What causes that’ll also have high blood
pressure.

DEAR READER — In many instances it’s ab-
- solutely necessary to see a skin problem before you
can really tell what it is. That’s why you should see
your doctor.
You may just have very dry skin. In such in-
stances using a skin moisturizer will solve the
problem. No moisturizer is really any better than
plain Vaseline The thick salve can be rubbed over
your bands and wiped off clean and still leave a thin
film that will trap'the skin's natural moisture
There are a number of infections of the skin that
""can cause similar problems and there are untold
opportunities for chemical irritation these days.
Regarding your cough, it is a symptom. I am

Anyone who develops a cough that persists any
length of time really should see a physician. Those
of short duration could be from a common cold, but
a persistent cough can even be a sign of lung cancer.
I’m confident that’s not true in your case. If you’ve
had lung cancer for 80 years, you couldn’t be writing
to me now ----
DEAR DR. LAMB — We recently moved from a
state with soft water to where the water is very
hard. Is it harmful to our bodies — kidneys, bladder
and so forth — if we drink" this hard water?

WASHINGTON (AP) - Women aged 16 to 24 run
the greatest risk of being the victims of rape, says a
federal study released Monday. It also says the
typical victim is poor and unmarried.
The study, commissioned by the Law Enfor-
cement Assistance Administration, was based on
assaults in 26 cities. Among its findings:
—The hours between 6 p.m. and midnight are the
most-dangerous. •
—Most assaults occur in open public areas such
as streets or parks.
—Resisting a rapist often means the sexual
assault is thwarted but the victim is more likely to
suffer other injuries.
—Most attacks are by strangers and, according to
the victims, attackers generally appear to be over
21 years of age.

higher than grades
By VAL WINSEY
Syndicated Columnist
- Dear Val: Our son got great grades in high school.
Last September, he started college The first
semester, he was almost a straight-A student But
then be began running around with this girl Lolie.
Everything changed For the second semester, he
got C’s and D's.
We don't know what it is about the girl or the rela-
tionship that caused this, but we're very concerned
We talked with Billy this summer about it. All he
said was that he was ape about the girl and had no
intention of giving her up.
My husband told him that be didn't have to give
the girl ufp, but his marks had better improve
significantly, or there would no longer be money for
his college tuition.
Billy felt this was putting in unfair restriction on
him His grades may be poor, but he was passing- =
I'm at a loss. Do I agree with my son or my
husband? — Unsure Mother
Dear Unsure: By all means-with your husband'..
Your son has a responsibility, like everyone else, to
do the best with his God-given talents. College is an
expensive item these days. If he's not going to make
the most of this golden opportunity that he's getting
"free-he doesn’t deserve it! And if you are afraid to
put it on the line, show him my answer.

mean water that contains lime; it’s the lime
deposits that you see on utensils and bowls that
contain standing water.
The lime doesn’t have any real medical
significance. It’s interesting to note that there are a
number of research studies that suggest individuals
who drink hard water are less likely to have heart
and circulatory problems than those who drink soft
water. This issue is debated and some theories have
been offered as to why soft water, at least in our
modem plumbing, isn’t necessarily the best choice
I must say, though, that if you have distilled water
which is about as soft as it can get and if no other
chemicals enter that water in any way through the
plumbing or other sources, there isn’t much of a
way that plain distilled water could be harmful..
