SEALY VFD ADVISES:
Never point a Roman Candle or other shooting fireworks in
another person’s direction. Avoid getting your eyes near shooting
sparks or exhaust. Never play with or stand over shells or devices
that appear to have faltered. A delay ignition can be injurious.

One person asks for “cigarette pop-
pers,” a once popular item that packs
into the open end of a cigarette and
almost passively goes off like the tip
of a sparkler.
“I haven’t seen those in years,” says
Searles.
Fireworks stand etiquette appears
to be catching on. Searles says.
People now discard their cigarette
before walking up to the sales
counter. If not, he just points to the
red lettered sign that says, “No
Smoking.”
“I stay here all day and night. I
sleep right there,” he says, pointing
to the floor of the stand itself.
Come January 2, he’s back at his
day job as a waiter at Denny’s in
Houston.
In 2003, so far, the most popular
items at Mr. B’s stand on Texas 36
are artillery shells, M-1000 caps, the
traditional Roman Candles and bottle
rockets.
The average sale at Searles’ stand
is between $25 and $35, although he
has sold as much as $400 in fire-
works to a single customer.
Fireworks stand operators pay
varies. Some make as much as 25
percent of the net sales.

Bovine spongiform encephalopa-
thy (BSE), widely known as "mad
cow disease," is a chronic, degener-
ative disease affecting the central
nervous system of cattle
Worldwide there have been more
than 180,000 cases since the dis-
ease was first diagnosed in 1986 in
Great Britain. BSE has had a sub-
stantial impact on the livestock
industry in the United Kingdom. .
The disease has also been con-
firmed in native-born cattle in
Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic.

Usually the kids know what they

usually pick something,” he says.

that look like grenades and shell

$169.95 plus tax.
“That’s a lot of money,” says 12-
year-old Vicki Esquivel, who, along
with several friends and her aunt,
are looking for something to help
bring in the new year, 2004, which
will include her becoming a teenager.
Her favorite item? “Roman
