“Hi, you want a Granny Guthrie
Cookie?” I'm walking into Jo Poston
Adams office at MH-MR She has
saved me a tea cake cookie. It is fat
and round and perfect. Exactly as I
remember them from childhood As
I bite into those cookies I am flooded
with childhood memories
Tea cake cookies are synonymous
with the holidays. My grandmother.
Ruby Guthrie, baked them for us.
She put them in a cookie jar The jar
was a golden apple with a blush of
red on the side and it sat on the
dessert table in the kitchen My aunt
Joyce still has it and fills it today for
her children
Jo Adams and I became friends
when I shared Granny Guthrie's tea
cake recipe. Her name was written
in the corner of the recipe Jo took
the recipe and we began to compare

they were called back to town as

Trooper Oppermann said the car

driver said he fell asleep at the
wheel and drove off the road. The
car struck a barbed wire fence and
turned over. The driver was not

Five posts and about 35 feet of

every Sunday. Morning Sunday
will work out for the best for those
who put their trust in the Lord
“We know that all things work
together for good to those who love
God” (Romans 8:28).
Instead of being filled with fear
and self-doubt, we can learn to have
confidence in ourselves and in our
God who will fight our battles in life
and make things work out for the
best
Instead of constantly complaining
about our financial problems or our
aches and pains, we need to
concentrate on our many blessings.
They are all around us if we will only
open our eyes and recognize them
Also, we need to realize that
problems don’t necessarily have to
make us feel unhappy. It’s a matter
of attitude. If we learn to accept
those things as challenges, we will
learn to overcome our problems with
the help of God rather than letting
them get us down.
In Galatians 6:7 we read,
“Whatever a man sows, that shall he
reap."
if we learn to act happy, we will be .
happy. If we give joy to others, we
will receive joy in return. What we
sow we will reap.
This is the way to truly have a
Happy New Year in 1991!

Americans may not be ready to

And if the U S recession turns out
to be a deep one, there will be
hundreds of thousands of jobs lost,
further dampening the economy.
All of this is coming at a time when
real estate prices have been
collapsing in various parts of the
country and hundreds of savings and
loans are going out of business.
Another thing hurting the econ-
omy is the huge amount of debt
loading down the government,
corporations and individuals. And if
the economy weakens very much, it
will put a big strain on this huge pile
of debts
Although many economists are
predicting a mild and short
recession, many of these same
economists were completely wrong
in their forecasts for 1990
So what will 1991 be like? Don t
depend on the forecasts of
economists to give you the right
answers

Prospects for war in the Middle
East and the likelihood that the
United States is going into a
recession is putting a cloud of
uncertainty on what 1991 will be like
Just a year ago at the beginning of
the new decade there was a lot of
optimism about the future The Cold
War had come to an end with the
crumbling of the Berlin Wall and it
was starting to look like we were
entering a generation of peace and
prosperity.
Then Saddam Hussein and his
Iraqi troops invaded Kuwait,
sending oil prices skyrocketing, the
stock market tumbling and put the
already weak U.S. economy into
even worse condition.
If there is a war in the Persian
Gulf, thousands of American
servicemen will undoubtedly lose

interest rates will rise in 1991 while
others thing the rates will drop
Some think gold is going up in price,
while others say it's going to fall
considerably
The same holds true for the stock
market and many other invest-
ments.
What it all boils down to is that
there are lots of so-called experts
who make a living writing
newsletters and columns about the
direction of things like the stock
market, bonds, gold and real estate
But hardly any of them are right for
any length of time.
So who do so many people stake
their economic future on these
predictions? One analyst thinks
“investors are always looking for a
messiah” - someone to save them
from their economic mistakes
Unfortunately, these experts are
human and they can't see into the
future. They didn’t foresee Iraq’s
invasion of Kuwait or the big jump in
oil prices They aren’t as perfect as
they would have you believe.
God has purposely clouded the
future And anyone who thinks they
are able to predict what's going to
happen with any degree of accuracy
over the next several years will soon
prove to be a false prophet
The future isn’t ours to see. It
should be left in the hands of God.
Instead of worrying about the
future and trying to find someone
who claims to have the key to the
future, we need to turn the future
over to God - and begin enjoying the
present.
Forget the mistakes you made in
the past and don’t be overly
concerned about the future. Live for
today and you’ll be much happier.
The only thing that Christians
need to know about 1991 and the
years after that is that it is totally in
God's hands. And that everything
