Improvements on the Somerville
Trailway will allow hikers, bicy-
clists, equestrians and campers to
further enjoy all or part of the
14-mile trail that links Birch Creek
Park and Nails Creek Park on Lake
Somerville.
Workers have been regrading the
trails, putting in some new culverts
and filling gravel in some low spots
that washed out in January, said
Park Supt. Robert Eades "This will
make it better for the mountain
bikers and horseback riders. ”
The trail passes through dense
company in the past has prided itself
on its ability to avoid reducing its
work force every time oil prices
came under pressure.
But finally Shell has buckled under
the three fold pressure that trig-
gered this slump - a downturn in
natural gas prices, a slowdown in
domestic drilling and a national
recession that turned out to be worse
than expected.
Just a year ago natural gas prices
were expected to soar, along with
the price of oil. Energy companies
had beefed up their staffs in the
early weeks of the Persian Gulf
crisis and expected a burst of new
drilling
But as it turned out, oil prices

leveled off and then dropped quickly
once the U.S. bombs began falling.
Natural gas prices plummeted as
warm winter weather kept down
demand, and by springtime natural
gas prices were at their lowest point
in more than a decade.
One analyst contends that there is
still room for just about every major
company to cut back further on its
domestic staff.
On the brighter side, analysts also
say the downturn shouldn't get
nearly as bad as the cutbacks five
years ago when 250,000 Texans lost
their jobs. Oil prices back then got
down to $9 a barrel while now oil
prices are holding above $20 a
barrel.

Weight Loss
Surprises
Researchers
WASHINGTON -A nutrition or-
ganization was hopeful that a nutri-
tionally complete “hi-tech” food
tablet would help erase world hunger
problems, until a study revealed that
one of the ingredients could cause
significant weight loss.
Researchers in Europe found that

Layoffs in the oil industry have
started picking up again in recent
months -- barely four months after
suffering through a devastating
round of layoffs and salary cuts.
In the worst round of cuts since
1986, at least 10 energy companies in
recent months have announced
plans to lay off workers or offer
them early retirement.
So far about 6,000 people already
have been affected by the actions
and employees say the industry is
gripped by the fear that many more
will follow.
Shell Oil Co., for instance, this
month reported its first quarterly
loss since the great Depression.
Shell plans to cut 10 to 15 percent of
its work force and the move suggests
that hundreds of the company's
12,000 local workers could be out of a
job.
This move by Shell is looked on as
a particularly bad sign since the
Umm
forest, past scenic overlooks and
through water crossings. Six
primitive campgrounds are located
along the trailway and their are 100
primitive campsites along the entire
21.6-mile network. The nearest
campground to Birch Creek is about
3% miles and from Nails Creek
about 2% miles. Each campground
has a compost toilet nearby; there is
no potable water along the trail, but
there are two wells with water for
horses The campgrounds are open
year round.

mal eating patterns, according to one
study published in the prestigious
British Journal of Nutrition. Research-
ers in an earlier study had speculated
that the weight loss was due to a
decrease in the intestinal absorption
of calories.
While the development of Food
Source One, a project of National
Dietary Research, would not be used
to successfully fulfill its original goal,
the formula which has since been
improved with other natural colloids
has been a windfall for overweight
people. A Daytona Beach, Florida
woman fighting a weight battle for 12
years used the product on the recom-
mendation of her physician and lost
30 pounds. She stated, “Not only
have I lost 30 pounds but my choles-
terol has dropped from 232 to 143.1
have twoclosets full of clothes which
have not fit me in two years that I can
now wear." In a separate report, a
telephone interview revealed that a
Wilmington, North Carolina phar-
macist lost 14 pounds in 3 weeks on
the product and was never hungry.
Food Source One tablets arc part
of National Dietary Research's com-
prehensive plan to bring a rapid end
to obesity in this country. A variety
of nutritionally sound diet plans, spe-
cially prepared by NDR, accompany
each bottle and provide a natural,
drug free alternauve for confronting
the problem of obesity.
