WE BELIEVE THAT RATHER THAN BRINGING TOURISM INTO GIDDINGS, A
HOTEL/MOTEL TAX MAY VERY WELL DISCOURAGE THE TOURISM WE NOW HAVE IN
OUR COMMUNITY! IF YOU AGREE, CONTACT THE MEMBERS OF THE GIDDINGS CITY
COUNCIL AND TELL THEM TO VOTE "NO" ON A GIDDINGS HOTEL/MOTEL TAX’!
A good portion of 1st quarter local motel business is gotten from
the Brenham Hog Sift. We have noticed an increase in Giddings
motel room occupancy during this event since Brenham passed a
hotel/motel tax in that city. People from all over Texas who attend
the Hog Sift are now using the Giddings motels, which contribute
substantially to the Giddings economy, because the Giddings motels
are known for having a reputation for HIGH STANDARDS at |
AFFORDABLE PRICES. If Giddings passes a hotel/motel tax, the
SAME high standards will not be maintained at the SAME affordable
prices. WILL WE LOSE THIS BUSINESS?
During the 2nd and 3rd quarters, the motels are used by
LOCAL families & friends for Reunions, Weddings & YRA Finals. !
So, the majority of tax would be paid by your families and friends. I
IS THIS WHAT YOU WANT?

Fire trucks were also summoned
from the New Dime Box Fire
Department and the Lincoln
Volunteer Fire Department.
While the firemen went to get the
fire truck, the sons of Mr. Dobos ran
to the house and tried to get in but
they were unable to enter the home
due to the extreme heat and smoke.
Firemen arrived on the scene and
immediately began shooting water
on the fire. They were able to knock
out some windows and doors to allow
the smoke to get out of the building.

Firemen also called for an

Brownsville, Harlingen area. In many instances, these Winter
Texans are on LIMITED BUDGETS. If Giddings has a motel tax
and our visitors have to pay even a dollar or two more for a room
because of the tax, will this mean that it will be more affordable for
them to stay in towns to the north of us where there is no motel tax
or a very low motel tax. We may not lose them this year, but what
about next year. CAN GIDDINGS AFFORD TO LOSE THE
INCOME GENERATED BY WINTER TEXANS?
According to state law, the motel tax must be used for promote
and attract tourism. We must first ask ourselves, ’’Does Giddings
have the necessary tourist attractions to promote tourism.”
Giddings plans to generate approximately $30,000 per year from this
tax. Will they be able to generate $30,000 in tourism income toward I
the local motels and/or any other business that operates in I
Giddings?

La Grange bank
Johnnie Johnson, a former
University of Texas All-American,
has filed a multimillion dollar
lawsuit against a LaGrange bank,
alleging that bank officials violated
its race-neutral policy when it
refused to renegotiate terms of a
loan.
Johnson, who is black, filed the
suit in state district court in Travis
County, charging that the LaGrange
State Bank libeled and slandered
him and also invaded his privacy;
intentionally interfered with his
professional football contract; was
also negligent and intentionally •
inflicted mental distress and
violated the Texas Deceptive Trade
Practices Act.
A native of LaGrange, Johnson not
only filed the suit against the bank
but also its board of directors and its
law firm, and individually named
the bank’s president, board chair-
man and an attorney with the bank's
firm.
The suit is centered around
payments on a $96,000 line of crdit
the bank extended to Johnson in
1987 The lawsuit states that Johnson
was to make a $48,000 payment in
February 1988 but that Johnson
asked to have the loan restructured
because he could only make a partial
payment.
The lawsuit says that despite
Johnson’sgood credit with the bank,
