Saturday the Ingleside Lions
Club held its first charity flea
market fundraiser in spite of
heavy rain showers.
Club members were elated to
see that people came out and
shopped even standing in the rain
clutching umbrellas. One club
member, Penny Wilkens, re-
marked that it was raining worse
than cats and dogs. “It’s more like
lions and tigers,” she said. The
fundraiser was a big success and
even the rain didn’t dampen the
spirits of all the members who
pitched in to help.
The Lions Club expressed its
appreciation to Leroy Cornelius
of International Bank - Ingleside
for use of the bank parking lot,
Coca Cola Bottling Company,
H.E.B., and Wal-Mart for soft
in Brownwood.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of
World War 11 and was retired from
the Exxon Oil Company. Bowden
was a member of the Central Un-
ited Methodist Church, a mem-
ber of the Friendly Fellows Bible
Class, and member of the Amer-
ican Legion, the VFW and DAV.
Survivors include his wife; a
daughter, Mrs. Richmond (Kaye)
Wilkins of Richardson; a sister,
Vera Alford of Ingleside; a
brother, Carroll Bowden of Cor-
pus Christi; a grandson and
granddaughter; and a number of
nieces and nephews. Also, a sis-
ter-in-law, Laurie Bowden of Ing-
leside and a brother-in-law, E.W.
Jackson of Dallas.

ters of discovery surounding
Texas’ rich legacy of quality sea-
food could prove a very rewarding

from the state’s Gulf Coast re-
gion.

Service, which is organizing the
first ever 4-H Seafood Challenge,
indicates this unique food show is

head of the park, recreation and
tourism program; and Ken Pagans
from that program.
The Ukranians met the A&M
contingent when they visited
Texas as guests of Ward and Ing-
leside Mayor Pro Tern Judy
Storm, who is also a partner in
Utex. Their university in Kiev has
no such outreach program into
communities as they learned ab-
out at a regional meeting in Aran-
sas Pass. They are hoping to fol-
low this model.
The symposium is being spon-
sored by Proxen, a Ukranian orga-
nization, working with an en-
vironmental institute in the
Crimea.
Ward said that changes which
have occurred in the Ukraine
since the coup have been posi-
tive. She said even before the
coup, the Ukraine was working
toward independence as a Repub-
lic, was already drafting a con-
stitution, which has now been
published, and actively sup-
ported Yeltsin and Gorbachev
during the coup.
Ward said the Ukraine has
signed economic agreements
with Russia and other republics.
She described their actions as
being conservative, not radical,
as they moved toward freedom
and democracy. She stressed the
importance of the Ukraine, which
with 52 million people, is second
in size only to Russia, and is the
richest of the republics in re-
sources
Ward and Storms both have
worked continuously in recent
years on a person-to-person basis
to help countries of what was the
Soviet Union to move into a mar-
ket economy and to adopt proce-
dures of Democratic govern-
ment.
