Practically the same question
was asked by The Texas Poll dur-
ing the last regular session of the
Legislature, in May 1949. At that
time, 62 per cent of all adults
said taxes were bringing in
_ the central part of
the North half of block 85 Luhr
Bor to Mr. and Mra.:
Alvin Dean Donnell of Mercury,
a son, November 5.
The figures above add to more
than 100 per cent because some
persons favored more than one
type of tax.
Governor Allan Shivers says he
is opposed to a retail sales tax.
He favors raising more money by
upping slightly various levies now
furnishing the state with revenue.
He has put the immediate prob-
lem of financing the state hos-
pitals to a special session of the
Legislature which starts January
31.

Director, The Texas Poll
AUSTIN—The clotds of money
problems moving over our state
government are still too distant
for most Texas taxpayers to see.
Seven out of every ten recent-
ly questioned in a statewide sur-
vey expressed the opinion present
taxes are bringing in enough
money to pay for all the necessary
costs of the state government.
This indicates the public does
not share the worries of state
officials who have to figure out
how to finance our mental hos-
pitals and generally how to stay
out of the red.
Not counting what the legisla-
ture may appropriate for the men-
tal hospitals. State Comptroller
Robert S. Calvert recently esti-
mated the general fund would be
$26,000,000 in the red by Sept. 1,
1951, unless tax collections im-
proved.
Before Colvert issued hie esti-
mate, The Texas Poll had put this
question to a cross section of men
and women in all parts of the
state:
“He yeu think present taxe8 re
bringing in enough money, or not
enough to pay for all the neces-
