Wins Tournament
The Brady Fire Department
fastball team emerged victorious
from the tournament held here
last week by the Heart o' Texas
Fastball League On Saturday
night the Fireboys defeated the
Mason Mavericks by a score of
12 to 5. The local team claimed
first place prize of $50 in cash and
the Mavericks as runner up claim-
ed a $25 prize.
The toughest tussle for the
Fireboys was in Friday's night-
cap. The Fire Department met
Menard in the first game for the
former team since they drew a
bye in the first round. The locals
finally eliminated Menard in nine
innings of play by a score of 7

Big Beverage Haul
Local officers seized 97 cans
of beer and 10 quarts of wine in
a search here Monday afternoon.
The beverages were found in a
secret compartment of a closet in
the residence of Jessie McDowell.
The search was made by T. R.
Gholson, State Liquor Control
Board agent, Sheriff Bennie Will-
born and E. T. Clay, city police
officer. McDowell was freed on
$1,000 bond awaiting action of
McCulloch County Court.

Nurses In Roundup
When officers of the Parent-
Teacher Association met last Fri-
day for planning the year’s work,
the group, headed by Mrs. H. W.
Gilbreath, president of the PTA
City Council, expressed their sin-
cere thanks for the cooperation
of local doctors and nurses in the
recent pre-school health round-up.
Conducted in July, the health
round-up provided examinations
for 100 children who will enter
school for the first time this fall.

The workouts have not pro-
gressed enough to pick a starting
lineup, Holland said. Thirteen let-
termen have returned to duty with

ly be the heaviest in several years.

Lohn District Votes
School Tax Increase
Voters of the Lohn School Dis-
trict went to the polls Saturday
to cant ballots on the question of
higher school taxes for the dis-
trict. According to unofficial re-
ports a large majority favored the
higher taxes. 80 votes being cast
in favor of the increase and 11
against.
The old tax rate in the district
was $1. A 35-ceut increase was
voted, bringing the tax to $1.35 on
the $100 evaluation on school
taxes.

The formal opening of Perry
Brothers’ new store and office
building at Lufkin last week was
the occasion for the gathering of
managers and friends of the firm
and individual members, including
Mr. and Mrs. George Purcell and

Dies Saturday Night
After Being Run Over
Funeral services were held
Sunday for a two-year-old child
who died after being struck by an
automobile between 7 and 7:30 o’-
clock Saturday night.
Esteranza Hope Barrera, daugh-
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Santos Bar-
rera, died in Brady Hospital about
9:20 Saturday night after the
wheels of an automobile passed
over her chest as she was playing
on the street in front of the
Barrera home in northwestern
Brady.
The auto was driven by Delta
Martinez. E T Clay, city police
officer, reported. According to the
officer, Miss Martinez had stop-
ped in front of the Barrera house
to let out Eva Barrera, a sister
of the victim After Miss Barrera
left the car, the Martinez girl set
the vehicle in motion, unknowing-
ly running over the baby.
This is the first traffic fatality
in Brady this year.
