Family Crisis Center in
final year of fund drive
The Family Crisis Center of
Bastrop, Fayette and Lee
counties is in its final year of
its Capital Campaign, The
goal is to raise $550,000 to
strengthen the financial base
of an organization that offers
safety to families in danger
and shelter for those who have
no place to turn.
The center is a nonprofit
agency that covers the three
counties with 250 volunteers
and a full-time staff of 15. The
center is a haven to people
traumatized by family vio-
lence, sexual assault and child
abuse. More than 4,400 people
are served each year with
counseling, education and di-
rect services.
The center is $77,000 away
from burning the note on their
facility, a 5,000 square foot
building in Bastrop.
Two bikes stolen, one
recovered by police
Giddings police investigated
two cases of stolen bicycles
last week and reported one
found bike.
Karen Wade, who lives at
police that her son's bicycle
had been taken off the front
porch during the evening of
March 3. The bicycle was de-
scribed as a black and green
12 inch boys Microforce with
training wheels. It was valued
at $51.
On Tuesday officers investi-
gated another case of a stolen
bicycle at 565 West Calvert.
Diane Grimm reported that
her son's bicycle was also sto-
len off the front porch some-
time last Monday night. This
bicycle was a yellow inter-
ceptor bicycle valued at $269.
Police reported a bicycle re-
covered in the 900 block of
North Leon Street on Satur-
day. However, this was not one
of the bicycles stolen earlier in
the week.

JOB
(FROM PAGE ONE)
continues to be one of the low-
est in the area at 2.7% - up
slightly from 2.5% the month
before. This gives the county a
work force of 10,505, with 280
unemployed.
Washington County's unem-
ployment rate rose to 2.8% in
January from 2.3% the month
before. This gives the county a
labor force of 14,984 with 427
without a job.
Burleson County's jobless
rate rose to 4.1% in January
from 3.5% the month before.
This gives the county a labor
force of 7,470, with 306 out of
work.
The jobless rate in Texas rose
a full percentage point from
4.9% to 5.9%, reflecting a slow-
ing overall economy statewide.
The Texas Workforce Com-
mission attributed this in-
crease in unemployment to lay-
offs in construction, manufac-
turing and agriculture, plus an
expected influx out-of-work mi-
grant workers.
There is no failure except
in no longer trying.
